HI all. I am searching for deatils regarding Rody Kennedy who was convicted of "assualt on the dwelling of Thomas Abbott" in August of 1843 and sent to Tasmania. I know from the Muster Records that his parents were John Kennedy, a farmer, and Margaret Sheedy (not 100% sure of the spelling). His siblings in the order they occur in the Record were Stephen, Patrick, John and Michael, and Kitty and Margaret. Is it possible to get Court Records from Nenagh? I have a newspaper article confirming all the "crime" details.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Find My Past (subscription site) has numerous petty sessions court records for Rody Kennedy of Co. Tipperary from 1837-1843. He was also in Kilmainham jail in Dublin in 1843 after a seven year assault conviction. I assume he was transported not long after he was in Kilmainham.

  • There was another Rody Kennedy transported at about the same time. He never left Tassie. My Roderick was on the Duke of Richmond. The name of the ship is how the records separate the two. Looking at he newspaper report, it seems unlikely that he did time as it's not mentioned. He was born in 1824. He would have been in gaol since he was 13. He was a carpenter. Tricky doing an apprenceship. I will check Find my Past. Thank you.

Are the records kept at Nenagh or in Dublin?

  • Teresa:

I would think Dublin but maybe you can contact the Nenagh branch library and see if they are aware whether 19th century petty session records are kept in the town.  http://www.tipperarylibraries.ie/nenagh/

  • The Kilmainham register shows that Rody was tried before the Nenagh Assizes, which is a higher court. His sentence is transportation for seven years. Unfortunately I suspect that these, like many legal records, were held in the Public Records Office or the Four Courts, and so probably lost during the civil war.

  • Hi Teresa,

I am a descendant of John Kennedy and Anne Hawley who married at Cloughjordan on 17 February 1855, prior to emigrating to Victoria later that year or early 1856.

From DNA matching results, I believe that John was most likely the younger brother (or if not, a cousin) of Roderick.

Were you aware that there is an information page on Roderick at:

    https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-database/roderick-kennedy

I have been trying to locate further information on Roderick's parents, John Kennedy and Margaret Sheedy, without success.

  • Hi, I know this is from a few years ago.
I looked for Thomas Abbott and he was in the Tithe records in the townland of Lacka, Parish of Loughkeen.
John Kennedy also in the Tithe records was in the townland of Gurteen Island, Parish of Loughkeen.
This is the map, it's not that far from Cloughjordan.

John was listed in Griffiths Valuation in th 1850's
