  • Hi, I am tracing my ancestry. and I saw the post above and believe it could relate to William John Frizell from Inverell in the state of New South Wales in Australia.  I do not know if he is the same one mentioned in the notice above. However, in a newspaper article from Inverell he refers to emmigrating from Tyrone County to Australia in 1911.  He also refers to working on the family farm in Tyrone before coming to Australia. . I beleive he emigrated to Sydney with his wife Mary. In Australia he settled in Inverell and started a dairy on a property known as Rosenstein where he had a number of children including a daughter Dorothy who gave birth to my mother (out of wedlock and was adopted out). The newspaper article is attached.  I would be greatful if someone could confirm if it is the same William John Frizel and any info on him and his wife Mary. Thanks Wayne

  • Hi, Adding to my post yesterday I forgot to mention that Dorothy Frizell's (eldest daughter) middle name is Isabella - same as the the mother of W J Frizell mentioned in Milton Kennedy's post  Also, one of Dorothy's brothers was named David - same as the father of W J Frizell. Maybe a coincidence.  Best Regards Wayne

  • waynet,

I found a marriage for William John Frizzell to Mary Hazelton in Belfast on 14.2.1911. He was a farm labourer and his father David was a farmer. So that fits:

    https://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/

I don't see them in the 1911 Irish census (which took place on Sunday 2nd April) so they likely left Ireland straight after their marriage.

Mary’s father was named as Simon. (Not a very common name).

    Wm John in 1901:

Wm John’s parents and siblings in 1911. Note that there had been 6 children, 4 of whom were still alive in 1911:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Tyrone/Bernagh/Cavan/866982/

This looks to be Mary in 1901:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tyrone/Drumaspil/Drumcrow/1736179/

She looks to have been illegitimate. There is a birth in Drumcrow on 7.10.1888. Her mother was Sarah Ann Hazelton of Drumcrow and the informant Elizabeth Hazelton of Drumcrow (both of whom are to be found in the 1901 census).

    1911 census:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Tyrone/Drumaspil/Drumcrow/865154/

I found this probate abstract for a Simon Hazelton of Drumcrow:

Letters of Administration (with the Will annexed) of the personal estate of Simon Hazelton late of Drumcrow County Tyrone Farmer who died 22 June 1894 at same place were granted at Armagh to William Hazelton of Drumcrow Farmer the Universal Legatee.

Simon was a bachelor aged 80 when he died and his will makes no mention of any children.

This is possibly Robert Hazelton who was on the farm in the 1901 & 1911 censuses:

Hazelton Robert of Drumcrow Coalisland county Tyrone farmer died 3 July 1939 Administration Londonderry 30 July to Annie Elizabeth Hazelton the widow. Effects £163.

There was another Hazelton family in Drumcrow, and they are probably related.

  • Hi Elwyn - Your research on this was amazing. I am greatly appreciative.  Ironically I as in Northern Ireland less than a year ago. I had no idea until a few days go I probably have ancestry there,  Best Wishes Wayne (Gold Coast, Australia).

  • Hi waynet

Elwyn did a great job correctly linking Mary to the "Killyman Hazeltons"

Mary Hazelton is the 7th grand-daughter of William Hazelton b.1600 England. William came to Confleacle Parish, CO Tyrone circa 1620 as part of the Ulster Plantation.  See attached

Please note: Since Mary was born out of wedlock, Simon is her grandfathers name not her father. While Simon may be an uncommon name in Ireland, it is very common (46) in my Ancestry public "Hazeltons of Ireland". The Simon listed above who died 1894 is a relative but not a direct ancestor.

If you don't have an ancestry account, I can give you free access to this tree using your email.

  • Dear Bill - Thankyou for providing the background to Mary Hazelton. I plan to travel to Inverell later this year to research more on the familiy. Mary I think lived into her 80's whereas William John Frizel lived to early 70s based on newspaper and electoral roll searches. The family were dairy farmers and well respected in the community. They had five orsix children. Thank you kindly for access to he family tree. My email addres is wayne.trappett.2013@gmail.com. Please let me know if you want me to share withyou my research on the William John Frizel and Mary Hazelton family. I am compiling this research into a word document and I can send it to you. Best Regards  Wayne
