I have found a death certificate for my great-great uncle which lists John Fitzpatrick and Ann Lawler as his parents.  I have nothing but their names and the fact that the children’s obits list County Cavan, Drumlane Parish or Belturbet as their Irish homes.

I have identified the following children who came to the United States (all in the late 1840s and early 1850s but not as a group) and died in New York City:

  • Bridget  1821-1860 (married a Robert McGuire)
  • Rosa  1825 – unknown
  • John – 1827-1905
  • Philip Augustus – 1828-1874 (married Bridget Daly in New York City, also of County Cavan)
  • Edward --  1831-1992
  • Mary – 1831 – 1892 (married a James Doyle)
  • Hugh – 1837 – 1862
  • And possibly a Patrick – 1836-1916

Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The Drumlane RC records do not start until 1836  http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0831  I looked on Roots Ireland and found four baptismal records for Fitzpatrick children where the father's name was John and the mother Ann. All four records show Fitzpatrick as the surname for Ann and you can't determine if this was her married name or maiden name. I also note that the records show three different townlands on these four records. There may have been multiple John/Ann Fitzpatrick families in Drumlane.  .

By the way, Fitzpatrick was a very common surname in Drumlane parish.

  • Thank you so much.  This will give me something else to "dig into".  I have been looking for many years for my great-great-grandfather's parents in Ireland and John Fitzpatrick and Ann Lawler are my first lead.  I have tried tracing the Irish part of the family through other family members and run into the problem with the dates and when records begin.  And, then to make it harder, the names are fairly common.  I do know that the men who came to the US did very, very well financially and were able to read and write.  Most were in real estate or liquors (as were many of the Irish in this era in New York City), but one son listed himself as a "master baker" soon after coming and started a large bakery with apprentices.  I will keep digging and will appreciate any other insights.
