  • Hi again Linda

On the basis of the information you have previously supplied, the only children I can see born to John and Elizabeth were a Thomas (1788) and John (1800) baptised in the parish of Granard, Co. Longford. There is an additional child of a John also recorded, Anne, baptised on 19th April 1795 but her mother's first name is not listed (but mother's surname is Monaghan) so she may be a sister of Thomas - we cannot be 100% sure.

The children of Thomas and Bridget Morris were baptised in the parish of Castlepollard. As Castlepollard and Granard are quite close to each other this may be the correct Thomas as the one born in 1788. The only way to know for sure though, would be to find a marriage record for a Thomas Kernan/Kiernan and a Bridget Morris, listing at the very least his father's name. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a marriage record listed for the couple. There will be no civil marriage record as the couple were Roman Catholic and married before 1864 when civil registration begins.

Anne and Thomas, children of Thomas and Bridget were both baptised in Castlepollard so it would seem that the family lived there at that time (1818-1829). As I said previously there is a Thomas listed in the Tithes in 1833 at the townland of Killeen in Granard - but there is also a Thomas in Co. Westmeath in 1827 which cannot be discounted. I did locate a death record for a Thomas Kiernan from Killeen in 1846, a man who died a bachelor and so this might be the Thomas in the Tithes just mentioned and perhaps rule him out.

It may be that you will have to undergo an information gathering exercise to learn what you can about any Kiernans in both counties in the hope that some records (like the death of a Thomas who died a bachelor, for example will rule themselves out.). Do you think there is anything else your side that could help - newspapers or obituaries etc? You could also go through the Granard and Castlepollard nli registers line by line to see if a transcription has been missed by Find My Past or Ancestry. I checked Castlepollard yesterday without any luck but a 2nd glance might be useful.
