If any survivors of the Selfridge family remain in Ardstraw, we would be delighted to hear from you.  Numerous confirmations of the fmaily from Ardstraw and nearby parishes are found in the 17th and 18th centuries, but its possible that none were left after several immigrations to North America.  James Selfridge (died 1786) has a stone in the graveyard.  My father (born 1908, Philadelphia) was also named James.  The same baptismal names as are found in older documents persist in several Selfridge family trees in the US until now living generations.  Many thanks for your interest.

  • No Selfridge households listed in Ardstraw in the 1833 tithes. The name is pretty rare in the whole county.

Looking at Griffiths Valuation for 1859 there were a couple of Selfridge households in Bomacktall Upper, (parish of Longfield). That was the only one in the county.

One household in Bomacktall Upper in the 1901 census (Presbyterian). Also 1 household in Newtownstewart (Church of Ireland).

None in the current phone book for that area.

  • There were at least two lots of Philadelphia Selfridges, maybe three, in colonial times.  The Edward Selfridge descendants came through Boston.  They are very numerous and well researched, although there are some conflicts between one tree and another.  A smaller group emigrated to Philadelphia at roughly the same time as the Boston group arrived (c. 1702).  There are later migrations, especially in the 1840s, via Newfoundland.  PA Selfridges outside Philadelphia are mostly likely to be descended from the Boston group, who had large families that scattered throughout Upstate NY, PA, VT, and MA.
