Having returned from my field trip to Borrisokane and Terryglass this last August, I was amazed to be told of my Great Great Grand Mothers (Elizabeth aka Eliza),Family. Her parents were Richard Bollard and Elizabeth White. and his Father was John Bollard of Terryglass.
However, my intent was to find out about my Great Great Grandfather's Family to which I was completely unsuccesful. Luke Hogan Sr. was born in October, 1799. I have no information on parents or siblings. But while visiting Borrisokane and unexpectedly meeting Mr. Martin Hogan of New York, (living in town for the Summer), was told that there are so many Hogans in the area that each Hogan Family has a nickname.
It is my hope that someone will have a list of these nicknames so a search can be better organized. As Luke Sr. was a Stonemason, and usually took up the trade of his Father and family, might our nickname be the Stone Hogans? I ask, I do not know. But any insight or guidance in this would be most welcome.

Hope you had a good trip. Feel free to add your ancestor's details to our Chronicles Project. You can learn more about it HERE and it might be another avenue to consider so that your ancestor's details can be seen by others.
Best wishes

Hello Michelle,
I had come across an old poem/rhyme that specifically explains the different Hogan families. I live in California and my father, Chris Hogan, was from Co. Kerry and I still have cousins there today, but our Hogan's def came from Tipperary initially. I will have to go through a lot of ancestry papers to find it, but it may be helpful to you. It's busy at the moment because we have relatives here for the Holidays but I will do it soon.
Merry Christmas and chat soon,

Hi Michelle,
Tom Kennedy here in Borrisokane. As you have already discovered there are a lot of Hogans around the Borrisokane area, though I haven't heard of Stone Hogans. I will ask around and see if Ican come up with something re Luke Hogan and Hogans in general. I'll get back to you early in 2018.
Regards,
Tom Kennedy.

Hello Clare,
I did submit my Ancestor's details shortly after the Chronicles were set up, about a year ago, was it?

Thank You Tom,
I did meet one gentleman in Borrisokane, Martin Hogan, who moved to New York City but now spends 6 months in Borrisokane and 6 month in NYC. I believe he is the one who mentioned Stone Hogans, not sure. It shows where I am on this search, LOL.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to you and your Family,

Hello everyone on this message trail. I am also a Hogan by birth and my family is also from the Borrisokane area and Monsea. I was in the area in July 2017 and I am also trying to find more abut my family. My great-great grandparents were Jeremiah "Darby" Hogan and Ann "Nancy" Whelan and they were married in Borrisokane in 1846. They are buried in the Ardcroney cemetery. If you have a look at the attached file, you can read the storey about Ardcroney Castle being the ancestral home of the Hogans in Tipperary. I found a lot of Hogans buried in Cloughprior Cemetery moreso than in Ardcroney. Cloughprior and Ardcroney are not far away from each other and not very far south of Borrisokane.
I would like to be kept in the loop about anything that is discovered about the Hogans. I am particular looking for Jeremiah's parents and Anne's parents also.
Merry Christmas to all
Julie Quigley (nee Hogan) from Australia

Hi again Julie,
I have recordings made of tombstone inscriptions around North Tipperary back in the late 1960,s I think. As you mentioned there are a lot of Hogan tombstones in Cloughprior Cemetery -39 in fact, and among those recorded about 40 years ago is the following.
Here lies the body of Mary Hogan otherwise Whelan who departed this life November 1 1789 aged 69 yrs.
Also the body of Darby Hogan who departed this life March 11th 1787 aged 56 yrs.
At this stage I can only surmise as to the relationship between Mary Whelan Hogan and Darby Hogan (in- laws?) and indeed any connection between them and your Hogan great grandparents married in Borrisokane in 1846. The plot thickens-
Darby Hogan born 1717 , Jeremiah Darby Hogan born c.100yrs later 1817?
Mary Whelan Hogan born 1720, Nancy Whelan Hogan born c. 100 years later 1820? Anything make any sense to you?
I live quite near to Cloughprior and I'll pay a visit there within the next few weeks to see if I can locate the graves and find any other clues.
Will be in touch.

Hi Tom
Thanks for your information - but it doesn't make any sense at this stage - that's not to say that there are no connections, just none that I can fit into my information. I have ben told told "Darby" is the accepted nickname for Jeremiah in Ireland and there are quite a few Jeremiah Hogans around the area at different times.
My Jeremiah "Darby" was definitely buried in Ardcroney, but we were not able to find his headstone when we were there. We had been pointed to a particular headstone as the right one, but after returning to the cemetery in bright daylight we were able to recognise the names Edward and Bridget on the headstone - neither of which names are on the transcript of the headstone as set out in the transcription (No. 66) in the publication that lists the headstones from this cemetery. ( I have uploaded this at the end of this email).
Any help or information you can add to this information will be gratefully received.
Cheers
Julie

Hello again-to Michelle and all,
I found the rhyme--used because there were so many Hogan families in Lower Ormond-
The Bush, The Branch,
the Mac and The Cranch,
The Tops, The Bawns,
and The Cliathawns (not sure of spelling)
Other nicknames are: The Jumper, The Bunk, The Duck, The Jobber
This information is taken from a post on rootsweb.com from 31 Mar 2010 by Sean Hogan listed as sean.hogan@ucd.ie . He states he grew up in the Parish of Terryglass and went to school in Borrisokane. These nicknames he says are from the Parishes Terryglass and Kilbarron.
hope this helps,
Dawn Hogan Hill

Now it is a matter of finding how this may further the hunt for the rest of my Family.

Hello Margot!
All things come to those who wait. I thank you deeply for this information. I can see that this gives me new directions for my search into the Family of my GG Grandfather, Luke Hogan (1799).
I pray that this finds all of your Family well, including Martin. He gave me an email address which I have written to several times but have not heard back. He advised that his Daughter would receive the messages and pass them on. If you can reach him, please tell him I think of him every day.
With permission of IRO XO, I provide my address for your use.
Stay Well, Much Love,
Michelle

Hi all,
Here goes...............
I have searched for Luke Hogan before and never found anything, other than he went to Canada.A .....Darby Hogan death 1885 ....... wife Nancy present at the death.
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…
This place is Ballyrickard this is near Ardcroney.
I can not find Nancy/Ann wife of Darby.Julie, the names and years when your Hogan's travelled to Australia would help.
We usually meet up with Martin, sadly not this year.
For the Bollard family....I saw this, from the Borrisokane Church Book, July 1831 left hand page.
6th July Pat (Patrick) to Richard Bollard and May (or Mary) Hogan

There is a Luke Hogan who died 09 Jul 1887 in Bruce County, Ontarario, Canada. He was a stonemason, 87 years, 9 mos of age when he died of "age and debility". His place of birth is listed as Tipperary,, Ireland. I tried to upload the record here but the site is not allowing it. File is clean so I don't know what else to do. Hope this helps.

Hello Margot,
Thanks for sending the link to Jeremiah's death - yes it is my g-g-grandfather, I had already found this record some time ago. But his wife's death still escapes me. Nancy was still alive when the 1911 census was taken - she was living with her daughter Mary Heffernan (nee Hogan) and her family at that time. There is a death for an Anne Hogan who died about 1920 in Carrigatogher - but it does not look like her as the record states that the informant was May Hogan grandaughter. For thiks yo me "my" Anne Hogan, her son James would have to be the father of May Hogan, the informant. Unfortunately, James had only two daughters, Annie and Elizabeth. And I can find no other connection to Carrigatogher.
You also asked when the other Hogans came to Australia. Bridget was the first. She had married in the Grawn Church near Cloughjordan to Patrick Hogan (we don't know if he is a relative or not). They came to Australia with some of Patrick's brothers in 1880. Next, Ellen came in 1883 and then Michael & John came together in 1884.
I have traced them here in Australia and have lots of information about them here. Its the stuff back in Ireland that I am having difficulty with. In particular, I would love to find out who were the parents of Jeremiah - and who were his brothers and sisters.
Cheers for now

Hello Frances and Margot,
Luke Hogan of the Borrisokane area was born in Nov., 1799, married Elizabeth (Eliza Bollard), emigrated in 1832 to Canada. Eliza's elder Sister married James Cuddie in1827 in Terryglass and emigrated to Canada in 1829, ahead of th Family, and Luke Hogan leaving several years later.
Luke is actually buried with his Daughter and Son-in law, the Cuddies in Ottawa, as Luke Sr did not have a grave purchased. He lived at 263 Clarence St., Ottawa, at the time of his death.
Luke Jr., I believe, was his second child. He had one child, Angus McDonald Hogan, my Father's Father. Angus and his wife Margret Gleeson had two children, Rose and Leo. Leo was my Father.
I live in the house that Graet Grandfather Luke Jr. moved into in the early 1920's. Our Family has lived here in this same house since then, in Cambridge (Galt), Ontario, Canada.
There is still much to do here to find all my relations from Luke Sr and Eliza's children. I am still hoping against hope that somehow I can find out more about Luke's Family. SO far, noithing has come to light.
Here is a resource that I hope is found useful;

Thanks, Michelle. Bytown or Bust is a fantastic site for Canadian ancestors. Unfortunately, Allan Lewis, who was the force behind that site and a walking encyclopedia of knowledge, retired a few years ago. He sent me photographs of the newly (at that time) renamed "Borrisokane Road" in Nepean, as well as of my Clarke ancestor's land there, so I was able to visit later. It looks as if someone has continued to work the site, though, so perhaps in time, you'll find the answers you need.
Good luck to you!

Hi,
When you said this............
Nancy was still alive when the 1911 census was taken - she was living with her daughter Mary Heffernan (nee Hogan) and her family at that time.
I have done this search before, I couldn't find Anne's Death.
The Carrigatogher Hogan's are not yours.1901 Anne was 80, 1911 she was 95.
As I said above I did search for her death and I didn't find it.Mary and Cornelius Hefferenan's marriage. Grawn Church is Graunorish
States..... Mary was in Hilton Cloughjordan at the time of her marriage, father Jeremiah.
This is Anne in 1901
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tipperary/Mertonhall/Ballyrickard_North/1691690/The house and buildings return form....
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003886294/The name at the top is my Great Great Uncle Patrick Kennedy.
See number 7....... Sam Hogan, then 8 The Church...
This is at the cross road on the hill, well it was, they moved the Church to Bunratty Castle Park.
These are the Hogan's of Congor.
So somewhere between Patrick Kennedy and the Church and Ardcroney is where they lived.Luke Hogan, unless you know his Fathers name I can't see you finding any more out.
Sorry not much help toda.

Hello, I am so grateful to have found this site, and everyone has been so kind and helpful. I have found that my great grandfather, Michael Carroll, emigrate to the USA, I don't know when. I did find a list of the baptisms of his siblings. His father was Rody Carroll, and his Mother, Margaret Hogan. Margaret must have passed, because after 5 children, the next 6 children were born to Rody Carroll and Catherine Hogan. I am wondering if Margaret and Catherine were sisters. Any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Sincerely, Elizabeth Shelley
