My Grandmother Catherine Scanlon was born around 1886 to James and Winifred Gillen Scanlon in County Sligo. I find Winifred's maiden name spelled about 5 different ways but can't find any marriage certificate (there are several James Turleys born around the same time). I know they had 3 children, Catherine, Norah and James born in Sligo. I am pretty sure all three siblings emmigrated to the US around 1903 with my grandparents meeting and marrying in 1914 and ending up in Danbury, CT. Norah married someone (cant find any records) and moved to Danbury, CT near her sister Catherine Turley. If the information I found is correct James married Margaret Burke in 1918 in NY and that's all I know. I can't find I have no idea what happened to my maternal grandparents and can't find out much else. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello again!
James and Winifred married on September 21, 1868 in the Kilfree/Killaraght RC church. Below are the church and civil marriage record transcriptions. You will note the names of the fathers of the bride and groom on the civil record. Also, James was shown as a widower so he was married before. From Roots Ireland, I found the following likely children of James and Winifred: Anna 1869 James 1872 Winifred 1872 (likely died young) Winifred 1877 Honoria 1881 Catherine 1883
I found the three children you mentioned: James, Nora and Catherine living in Carrownagark townland in Tawnagh civil parish in the 1901 census. I located a 1909 civil death record (see below) Winifred Scanlon in the Asylum in Riverstown Sligo. This record showed her husband as James Scanlon. I'm wondering if this was your ancestor. It also indicates that she was married implying that James was still alive.
Let me know what questions you have.

Hi, my grandfather was James Scanlon from Carnagark. He was a brother of Catherine . He was born in 1876 and died in 1949. He was the only member of his family not to emigrate. His son Thomas Brendan was my dad. Died 29th Jan 2017 aged 92. Catherine's sister Norah (Hannorah) born 17th April 1883 -25th Dec 1964 in Connecticut. I think there was another brother John J who also went to America. My brother currently lives at their homestead Carnagark and we are down the road at Drumfin. We are currently looking into the family tree and will post more as we find out. Regards, Helen.

Wow, when it rains it pours. I just found family on my grandfather's side of the family and now may have found Scanlon family. I am so excited!!!! I met Catherine's sister Norah once or twice when I was younger but neither side of my dad;s Irish roots were talked about so I know nothing of my heritage and am so full of questions, lol. Can you tell me the correct spelling of your grandfather's mother's maiden name? I have seen Gillan, Gillen and a few other spellings. And did she die in a medical facility?
Thank you so much for filling in some of the gaps. I hope we can stay in touch and get to know more about each other. I do have siblings and Grandma has 3 live births and around 5 stillbirths from what I remember my dad telling me years ago.

Hi Kathy, I'd love to stay in touch, are you on Facebook, I could find you. My sister is in touch with Patricia Taylor who lives in Colorado, she is a granddaughter of Norah, there's another branch of the family for you if you don't have them already. We are not too sure of the spelling for Gillen but we are also looking into it at the moment. Chat Soon,
Best Regards,
Helen.

Hi Helen, yes I am on Facebook (Kathy Turley Stevens). I am just thrilled to have found more cousins I never knew about. I myself have never been to Ireland but my youngest brother, Brian, has been over there probably at least 5 times. And I know if he ever visits Ireland again he would love to look you up and meet you. As it is we really have no information on Grandma's side. I know she had a sister Norah but that's all I know. Our family was never talked about so I had very little to start out with.
I have uploaded a picture of the family when my dad and his siblings were adults. Grandma ended up living with her daughter Anne until she passed in 1960. My grandpa had passed in 1952 so I am not sure when she moved in with her daughter.
Are you and your brother the only children in your family? Who did your dad marry? Any children between you and your brother (his name is?)? So many questions lol.
I am so looking forward to staying connected to family so I thank your for answering my inquiry into the Scanlon history.
Your cousin, Kathy

The reason I asked is because she is the spitting image of my dad's sister or Catherine's niece. Her name was Kathleen, written as Kate on the 1911 census. I'll attach a photo. My dad had 10 in his family. He was the second youngest. All are deceased now. We are the next batch of oldies.

My cousins and I have found out quite a bit of family history but only as far as our Great grandparents names but no sibling names or parents, etc. I wonder if anyone can provide us with more information on the Scanlons of Sligo. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello
I am also trying to trace members of the Scanlon family from Croom. In particular anyone who knows of Catherine Scanlon born 1936 who moved to London to work possibly in her 20's. I believe she may have been one of three children born to a marriage between the Scanlon and Manning families. If anyone can help me I would be very grateful
