I am searching for the place of origin of my Dennehy ancestors. Here is the information  I have:

John Dennehy and Margaret Murphy married circa 1845 and emigated to the U.S. in 1852, arriving at the port of New York  on the ship Lady Hobart on April 15 of that year. They took with them their two children: Michael (born Sept. 1847) and Mary (born 1851.) I believe that the parents of John Dennehy were Michael and Catherine, and that John had a brother James.  I believe the parents of Margaret Murphy were Patrick and Mary, and that Margaret had a sister Sarah and a brother Thomas.

I would be very grateful for any information anyone can provide that might help me to establish the family's place of origin.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

www.irishgenealogy.ie has the church records for Co. Kerry. The site is free. I could not find a record in Valencia. Here is the parish register for Valencia  http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0682   I did find an 1840 marriage in Rathmore which is in another part of Kerry. This marriage was in 1840. Are these your ancestors or another couple?

Let me know what questions you have.

  • Many thanks for your quick response, Roger. I did discover the 1840 Danihy/Murphy record for Carrigaline a few years ago and tried to pursue it through a genealogist I hired online in Dublin. He was not able to find any other records that could connect my family to that area. He did discover a death certificate for one of the couple's sons that listed Valencia as the place of origin for his mother, Margaret Murphy. That is what led me to post my inquiry. Perhaps I need to repost my query and ask for help from people in the Carrigaline area.  I am grateful for any suggestions you can offer me.

  • Hello Roger,

Since I have hit a dead end looking for my Dennehy/Murphy ancestors in Valencia and Kerry, I thought I might try looking for them in County Cork.  I see that records for North Cork are available, but have not found any for South Cork. Could you put me in touch with someone in South Cork?

    Thank you,

    Pat Scott

The site I mentioned above www.irishgenealogy.ie has records for the Diocese of Cork and Ross which includes the parishes in southern and western Co. Cork. The records for the Diocese of Cloyne (north and east Cork) are on Roots Ireland a subscription site.

Let me know if you have further questions.
