Looking for Information on John Joyce and Mary (nee Coyne) Joyce.  My great grandfather was Thomas Joyce born about 1846 in Letterfrack.  He married Mary Connolly (her parents Patrick Conneely and Bridget (nee Lydon) Conneely)  on 17 Feb 1885 in Tully RC Chapel, Renvyle, County Galway, Ireland.  Thomas died 13 October 1931 Dawrosbeg, Letterfrack, County Galway, Ireland.  I have been unable to find death records for his parents.  Any help would be appreciated.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I located the civil marriage record for the 1885 marriage. You have to sign-in to see the record. In any event, there is no annotation of deceased next to John Joyce so I assume he was alive in 1885.The problem you will have is the high number of John Joyce and Mary Joyce records in the Clifden registration district. Also if he died before 1885 then you have more records to sort through.

Recently, the Irish government released the images for civil records and they are available for free at www.irishgenealogy.ie

As of now, only deaths from 1891 on have images but they plan to add the older records over time.

I would look at the death records from 1891 and see if you see a John or Mary Joyce in Dawros beg  For 1890 back to 1864, I would wait for the rest of the images to be updated to the site.

  • There is a John Joyce and Mary Joyce both very elderly living with a Conneely family in Dawrisbeg in the 1901 Census of Ireland, it is the same townland where Thomas and Mary Joyce are living. They are the mother and father in law of the head of household. They would be the wife  Anne Conneely's parents. They could be Thomas's parents too. The spelling in this Census in Dawrisbeg  (Rinvyle, Galway).

I haven't looked at Census of Ireland 1911 yet.

I'm used to researching in this area, let me know if you need more help.

  • Hi,

See that the Patrick and Anne Conneely family are now Connolly in 1911 Census. Literacy levels would have been poor and these areas had been Irish speaking areas. Names evolved in english from the Irish names. A common surname in the area Coyne was usually Coin in earlier records.

    Hope I helped in your.research

  • Finishing off now. Found the Death record. It is wrongly transcribed as Mary Jack. Joyce is perfectly clear on the record.

    This is the link https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…

Mary Joyce, Age 80 Married, Dawrosbeg. Informant Anne Conneely Dawrosbeg. Date 08-Aug-1902.

  • Thank you,

I was a little hesitant about Ann Joyce Conneely being my great grandfather's sister because of her address listed as Roe Island on her marriage record.  Then I looked through the baptismal records of Tobias Joyce (my grandfathers brother) and I am more confident.  I am going to pencil her family in and make a note to double check when the pre 1890 death records come online.

Thank you for all your help,

    Lynn

  • Hi,

I am doing research myself in that area and during my search today the name Anne Conneely caught my eye. It was a death record  in Dawrosmore of 02-Dec-1932 for her sister Kate Joyce a spinster aged 72 yrs. This might help.

  • I rechecked the Anne Joyce and Patrick Connolly/Conneely wedding in 08-May-1892 in Letterfrack Church. Their addresses are both given as Dawrosbeg.

    Link https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_re…

I noted that their first 3 children Mary, Nora and John are registered as Connolly and the later children as Conneely. The family appears to be Conneely going forward.

  • Hello, I am very interested in your findings regarding the parents of Thomas and Mary Joyce. My research consists mostly of their children. I am the great, great grand daughter of Thomas Joyce and Mary Connolly Joyce. Their son and my great grandfather, Martin Joyce was born in 1896 and traveled to Ellis Isalnd with 2 other Joyce brothers, Michael and Patrick in 1914/1915. After a brief stay in western Pennsylvania, Martin married, settled and became coal miner in Taylor, Pennsylvania and raised my grandfather, Edward Eugene Joyce and his brother, Martin Jr. with his wife Penelope Woodmancy.

Martin's Sr. younger siblings, Tobias and Edward Joyce also joined him in Pennslyvania from Ireland. My mother, remembers her "PopPop" (Martin Sr.) fondly, as well as her silly Uncles and wonderful father, Edward Eugene.

I have photos of all of the siblings, as well as a photo of Mary and Thomas Joyce, as well as the very aged Mary Connolly Joyce. I have posted them on Ancestry.com, but I could try to send them to you, if interested. When my family visited Letterfrack in 2012, we meet Anne Pattington (a Joyce ancestor, as well) in Dawrosbeg who took us to see the ruins of Thomas and Mary's homestead. The stone walls were intact and the view of the bay was stunning. I would be happy to share photos, if interested. My email is clbzipf@gmail.com.

I hope to learn about sibling Mary. I have found no trace of her in my research. (Siblings: Patrick(1886), Michael(1887) and Martin(1996) landed on the east coast US via Ellis Island, Joseph(1890) supposedly lived on the west coast, Thomas (1893) served in the military and drowned in a boating accident after the war, Tobias (1899) and Edward (1903) came to PA.

    Warm Regards,

    Hi Cristen,

I had a look at my research on Mary Joyce who was born on 27 June 1892 in Dawrosbeg. She was living with her family in both the 1901 & 1911 Census of  Ireland. There was no suitable Irish marriage record that I could find for her.

I looked on the Ellis Island Foundation site to check before I undertook further research here. I am reasonably certain that your Mary Joyce is listed as going to America in 1912. It is a comprehensive record. Mary Joyce sails on the S.S. Oceanic from Queenstown leaving on July 11 1912 & arriving in New York July 17 1912. She is listed as going to New Haven, Conn. to a cousin Mrs. John Conroy, 38 Edward St.,New Haven, Conn. Her next-of-kin is listed as her father Thomas Joyce, Dawros, Letterfrack, Co. Galway. You can see the full details over two pages on the Ellis Island website, I attach screenshot from one of the pages.  At that time there was no other Mary Joyce of her age with a father Thomas Joyce in Dawros.

I hope this has been helpful and you can continue your research.

  • Hi emco,

You are correct, Mary Joyce did go to New Haven, Connecticut in 1912.  She married John Cannon in New Haven,  Mary was my grandmother.  I contacted Christen directly through email.

Thank you for the information about Mrs John Conroy (Ella Connolly).  I have been looking for the family for a while, Ella and John married in New Haven in 1910 had 2 children in New Haven, CT then moved to NJ. My mother had a note on the back of a picture of Fr John Conroy stating that he was a cousin but I didn't know how, It must be through Ella Connolly.

    Thank you,

    Lynn
