  • Hi Elwyn

I would say  Henry was Church of England as he died in India in 1900.  The funeral was at St George's Cathedral, Madras, India which orginally was Church of England.

The information I do have is from Henry's army records.  He put down his occupation as taylor and his father's name as Robert.

I have tried all the online resources with no success.  The only other way would be for me to check church records in person which is out of the question as I live on the otherside of the world.

    Cheers

  • Rowline,

In Ireland the Church of England is the Church of Ireland (COI). There are several COI churches in Bangor:

St Comgall’s has baptism records from 1803 and marriages from 1805.

Bangor Abbey lost all its early records in the 1922 fire in Dublin. (Ironically they had been sent there for safe keeping). It now has nothing prior to 1920.

Groomsport also lost its early records in the 1922 fire in Dublin. It has nothing before 1876.

So 2 of the 3 likely churches have lost their records for the period you are interested in.  There’s a copy of St Comgall’s records in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast.  Your choices would seem to be either to get a researcher to go to PRONI to look them up, or pay PRONI to do a look up for you, or you could write to the Rector/Vicar at St Comgall’s and ask him/her to search the records. If the incumbent agrees to that then expect to pay a search fee. (Usually around £19 an hour but they’ll advise).
