Hi, I'm searching for the baptismal record of Richard Molloy.  Richard married Hanora Ryan in the early 1820's and had eight children baptized in Moyglass from 1823 - 1842.  In 1848 Richard and his family departed Moyglass for America.  Thank you, John Malloy

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I found a marriage in early 1823 for a Richard Mulloy to a Mary Ryan in Cashel which is one parish over from Moyglass/Killenaule. See below. No marriages to a Hanora Ryan. Do you have the baptismal records for the children?

Hi Roger, Yes I have the baptismal records for the children begining with Simon born 9/11/1823 to Richard Molloy and Hanora Ryan with sponsors James Ryan and Ellen Molloy (see attached for details).  We've identified Hanora's baptismal record in Moyglass but have not been able to locate Richard's baptismal record.  Regards, John

  • Hello Richard,

Your posting (Oct 2016) on the Molloys of Moyglass, Tipperary is of interest to me. I am descended from the Molloy family at Moyglass. I grew up at Moyglass surrounded by the last members of of the Molloy family. (Sadly they are all gone now, with the last Molloy passing away about ten years ago).

I have done considerable work on the ancestry of this family. I had previously noticed that the family of Richard Molloy vanished from Moyglass in 1840's. I had no Idea where they went (until I saw your posting). I had suspected they may have gone to Wisconsin. You may be able to confirm if this is correct.

I have have a lot of additional information on the Molloys. Let me know if you get this message.

Regards - Gerard Walsh (now living in Canada)

  • Hello John,

The Malloy (Molloy) surname is not common in South Tipperary. The family appears to have resided at Moyglass since at least 1730. They appear in the parish records for Killenaule/Moyglass in the mid-1700's. The records for this parish are quite good, albeit there are some gaps and inconsistencies. The family of Richard and Hanora is listed in the House Books for the townsland of Moyglass dated 5 Nov 1846. The family is not shown in the Griffith Valuation Records dated 1850. This aligns with your information regarding emigration ~ 1848. (It was an awful time in Ireland with the famine raging).

There were three Molloy families listed for Moyglass in the 1840's. John, Frank, and Richard. They are all linked through the name Simon (which is a very unusual first name for the area). Hence, I believe they are all closely related (either brothers or first cousins). My gg-grandmother was Ellen Molloy from Moyglass. She was born 1786 (approx). Her father was probably Simon Molloy. She may have been an older sister of Richard. Ellen Molloy married William Ryan of Graystown, 30 Nov 1816. Ellen's daughter Bridget (b. 1834) married Richard Walsh (also of Graystown). They were my g-grand parents.

The Molloys are reputed to have donated the land on which Moyglass Church is built. Ellen (Molloy) Ryan was buried in the graveyard at the church in 1852. Her headstone is clearly marked. Of the three Molloy families, the descendents of John continued to farm at Moyglass until his gg-grandson another John Molloy passed away 11 March 2009. He was unmarried. His brother Patrick (also unmarried) passed away the previous year. The farm was inherited by a family called Hannigan who were coincidentally descended from Ellen Molloy. The last Simon Molloy died in 1965. He was the father of John and Patrick.

My father Patrick Walsh was born and grew up at Graystown, about two miles north of Moyglass. He moved to Moyglass and built a house on land inherited from his father. I grew up in Moyglass and nearly everybody around us was descended from the Molloys.

Some years ago I noticed a 1860 census record for Wisconsin that listed a Richard and Simon Molloy. I added a note in my own records (for further follow up). Your posting now confirms my information. There are now no Molloy families left in the area around Moyglass. Its wonderful to have found a family still bearing this name. Are ye all still in Wisconsin.

I hope that I haven't overloaded you with information. Finally, have you done the DNA test?

All the best for now - Gerard (from Ontario)

  • Hello Gerard,

I assure you that you have not overloaded me with information! I hope I don't over load you with questions.....It's been a number of years since I dug into the details of the Molloys of Moyglass so I will need to refresh my memory.  I do have a couple of quick questions for you:

    - I have taken a Y-DNA test and I am very closely related to a Molloy whose family lore has it that his branch of the Molloys was from the Cully branch of the Molloy clan in the Parish of Rahan/Lynally in Offaly.  I'm assuming that our Tipperary Molloys once lived in "O'Molloy Country" or Firceall in Offaly and at some point relocated to Tipperary.  Do you have any knowledge as to when our Molloy family may have relocated to Tipperary?

    - Another Molloy that I am closely connected with via DNA has family records that state his Molloy family (John Molloy) was living at Clareen, Ballycahill, Thurles, in Co Tipperary in the 1800s. This John had sons Bartholomew, Denis and also John that we know of. In the next generation, leaving aside John (1801-’72) , we have references to John, Thady, and Denis who may have been sons of either Bartholomew and Denis – who were brothers of John (1801-’72).  Do you have any knowledge of a Molloy family from Clareen, Ballycahill, Thurles, in Co Tipperary?

I currently live outside of Chicago but I grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  Richard and Hanora Molloy settled in Milwaukee in the early 1850's and were among the first Molloys listed in the city directory.  Many of their Molloy descendants still live in Milwaukee and throughout Wiscsonin.

I wrote a family history book on my Malloy/Molloy family history which includes a chapter on the Moyglass Molloys that I would like to share with you via a link.  Perhaps we should exchange email addresses?  My email address is johnpmalloy@comcast.net

    Best Regards,

    John

  • Hi John,
I am also a Molloy descendant from Moyglass/Killenaule. My ancestor John Bartholomew Molloy was born 1793 and had 4 sons and a daughter. They emigrated to America through Canada about 1828-1830 ending up in Rochester NY. We don't have any record of his wife Eliza Gale making it to NY. They travelled from Rochester to Milwaukee in 1847. They moved to the Baraboo area in 1851 where they had a military land grant and some relatives still live there. We knew only that our family came from County Tipperary until a recent discovery showed that on one of the son's military enlistment documents he listed Killenaule as his birthplace.
