Tom thats brilliant work. Thank you very much.
That information fits in perfectly with what we remember. I had just started finding the same records as you, as I heard that the civil records had become free to view on irish genealogy.
Thank you for the photo of Peter. I wonder why he was also known as Foley.
In the 1911 Census I have my Grandmother living at 12 mountain road, with Michael & Catherine, and the rest of the family.
Ive attached some pictures.
Michael & Catherine Cleary (My Great Grandparents). Im assuming that the picture of Michael & Catherine is at Mountain Road, although im not sure.
Two pictures of my Grandmother Margaret Cleary (Known as Peggy). They came from my grandfathers old album. The album is falling to bits, but the writing in the album says mountain road caher, and "pegs home" on the back of one of the photos.
I think the photos of Margaret must be around 1927/8. As her first child Edward was born in 1928. If you notice she has a bump on her stomach!
Do the pictures look consistent with mountain road/caher with you Tom? As I say the album is very old, and a lot of the photos had fallen out. I had to try and match them up with the annotations in the album.
I will be glad to know what you find out, the next time you are in Cahir. Once again thank you for all your effort, it is much appreciated.
Best Regards

Hi MadIrish,
My Bridget Cleary, daughter of Thomas Cleary & Elizabeth Mulcahy, was baptised in Cahir in 1844, immigrated to Australia in 1860's and married another native of Cahir Michael Shortis in 1869. Not sure if there's any link?
Regards,
Kerry

Hello MadIrish,
Just seen your post so had to join to reply, My paternal grandfather was called Patrick Cleary (born 1880s) also from Mountain road Cahir and I believe your grandmother was his neice if when she move to the uk she lived in Stoke Newington outer London then it would seem we are from the same roots.
I visited Mountain road a number of years ago and had a lengthy chat with a John O'brien who remembered the Cleary family well in fact his best friend was Michael Cleary until Michael passed away in the 1960s.
Patrick Cleary,s father was James Cleary his Mother was a Foley I need to check on her christian name but understand that it was quite a normal practice for families to use the mothers maiden name equally as much as the fathers name.
I will firm up my info as much as I can dates and names etc if its of interest to you.
Best Regards

Wow!
Thank you Scrambler & Tom. Great information.
Yes Scrambler any info you find would be of interest. Stoke Newington is correct! They lived in Cowper Road Stoke Newington. I will also check my own information to make sure it all ties up.
Tom, wonderful information. Its amazing to think that we can find all this new information, years later. Thanks to you both.

Hi Kerry,
Sorry its taken me so long to reply.
You asked about Bridget Cleary, daughter of Thomas Cleary & Elizabeth Mulcahy, was baptised in Cahir in 1844, immigrated to Australia in 1860's and married another native of Cahir Michael Shortis in 1869.
Ive not been able to find records linking our lines together. But then again that doesnt mean there isnt a link, its probably just me being an idiot in finding the records! Sometimes Im very good at finding records, other times I cant find a thing.
Im sure there must be some connection as Caher was a small place back then.
If I find anything I will let you know.
All the best

Hi Scrambler
My paternal great grandfather was Patrick Cleary from Mountain Road who emigrated to England, married Ethel Maud Storey in Liverpool and then settled in Suffolk where she was from. Is this the same Patrick Cleary that is your grandfather?
The story within my family is that the Clearys who were left in Ireland changed their name to Foley in the early 1920s after one of Patrick's brothers was shot by the IRA. It's really interesting to learn where the Foley name came from, thank you.
I'd be really interested to learn about any of the other members of the family as I'm struggling to find information through the record sources online.
Many thanks
Helen

Scrambler,
Did you manage to find out any more information about your side of the Cleary family. We are definitely from the same tree!
You mentioned James Cleary, and his wife who you thought was a Foley. I cant seem to find anything about them in the records (probably because I am useless)
Best Regards.
