I am looking for information about the family of my great grandmother Mary Chadwick.

On her marriage certificate in Melbourne in 1869 she gives her birthplace as Tipperary, Ireland and her parents as John Chadwick (Tradesman) and Eliza O'Donnell. She gives her age as 22.

In the Parish records for Tipperary Parish I have found a baptism for a Mary Chadwick on 25th December 1845 with the parents John Chadwick and Ally O'Donnell. The sponsors were Edmund and Catherine O'Dea

This seems to be a very likely fit but there are no other baptisms recorded to this family and the only information I have been able to find about her arrival in Australia is a passenger list for the ship Eagle which left Liverpool in December 1854 with an Elizabeth Chadwick 45, William Chadwick 12 and Mary Chadwick 8. This seems to be a possibility although on the passenger list they are designated as English, not Irish so it may be completely irrelevant. If this is my family then the question arises where is the father John Chadwick. Perhaps he was dead or perhaps he came to Australia earlier as was sometimes the case.

I would be very grateful if anyone can shed some light on this family for me.

  • Hi  Chadwick a very scarce name in Co Tipperary.  I found two families near Tipperary town in Griffiths Valuation.  One in Solougheadmore and one in Shronell.  Did you manage to find townland on the Shipping list.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Thank you for the information Christina.

Unfortunately there is no mention of a Townland in any documentation that I have found. Mary died at 86 and sadly by that time there was no one left who knew the details of her birthplace and this is usually where one may be lucky enough to find mention of a Townland in a death certificate or on a gravestone.

The witness at her wedding was Mary Ellen Lyons. Often the witness is a relative who has come from the same place in Ireland but this may depend on how soon after arrival the wedding takes place. I am not sure if this has any relevance in this case.

  • Hi Again, I found Mary's Baptism on the date you said in the Catholic parish of Tipperary.

There was no townland mentioned.  I will check again for more Chadwicks in the area

    in Griffiths valuation 1850s.

In the 1901 census  there were only 48 persons named Chadwick,in Co Tipperary.  and  none near Tipperary Town.

Did you find baptism for her brother.

Let me know if you have any questions,

    Christina.

  • Hi Christina

I have not managed to find any information about Mary's possible brother William in any Victorian documentation, such as marriage or death and the same with her mother Eliza. There seemed to be quite a few Chadwicks in Melbourne in the mid nineteenth century and it is difficult to work out which one may have been her brother or if indeed the Mary Chadwick I found on the passenger list is my great grandmother.

At least I think the baptismal record we found for Tipperary parish is correct as if there were so few Chadwicks then the chance of another John Chadwick marrying an Eliza O'Donnel and having a child called Mary is fairly remote.

    Thanks Christina

  • Hi again . I found  two Chadwicks in Nelson St Tipperary Town on Griffiths valuation.  Nicholas in lot 39., William in lot 46.  The name William  would suggest  he may have been a relative, as Marys brother aged 12 was William.  I also found Lyons  in parish of Solohead/Oola.  very near Tipperary Town parish   Let me know if you have any questions.

    Christina.
