Robert Hewton born c1841 Armagh, to Robert Hewton and Eliza Woolsey(Wilsey) he immigrant to Australia 1866. I have not been able to find anything about his parents or siblings. Robert Hewton senior and Eliza Woolsey were married in 1832 Armagh. On the marriage certificate of their son Robert it was stated that Robert senior was a head constable.

  • If Robert senior was a Head Constable, he probably served with the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC). His service record should tell you a bit more about him. It was RIC policy not to post a police officer to a county where he or his wife had connections, so the one thing you can probably deduce at this stage is that he did not come from Co Armagh. His service record should tell you his county of origin.

The service records are held in a number of locations eg NAS, Kew London, PRONI in Belfast and the National Archives in Dublin. If you can’t get there, the police museum in Belfast will do a look up for a fee. See:

  • Thanks Elwyn

Will try what you suggest. I did not know about the policy of the RIC not posting them where he or his wife had connections. I did find Record landed Estates Court Vol 056 D036 - Eliza Hewton, 1859 Place Jenny's Row - covering date Jul-Oct 1859 - Rentals 1850-1885 in Armagh, Category Census Land Survey - sub-Category Land and estates Court rent - No 9 Townland Jenny's Row - John Ballentine (now Eliza Hewton) dwelling house and premises £6 yr rent, 1 May and 1st Nov - Tenure monthly tenancy, determinable on a months notice from 1 May 1858 rent payable 10shillings monthly free of taxes.

I am not sure if this is my Eliza Woolsey(Hewton)

  • When property is in a woman’s name like that she is often a widow. (Married women didn’t normally hold property in their own name). Do you know when Robert senior died? (His service record show say).

You can use the revision records to see how long the property remained in that name and who replaced her.
