Hi: I have been told several bits on information, and a few points I can prove about James and Mary, and I would welcome some suggestions for next steps.
I have been told that James Tighe was born about 1801 in Rathmore, Kilcommon, parents yet unknown. James married Mary McHale (father may be Martin McKeale) some time around 1824 and had four daughters: Anne born 1824-25; Dorothy born 9 Sept 1831 (baptized Sept 11 1831 Crossmolina parish, recorded); Mary born about 1836, maybe in Glencastle; and Jane born about 1839 somewhere. There are a couple of records for James in the Tithe Applotment books for Rathmore, 1832, although I don't really understand the information, and that could be him. I do not see him in Glencastle. I have also been told that he died either shortly before they left or on the way to Canada in 1839. I know Mary (ca. 1804-1881) and her daughters were in Kingston Ontario Canada by 1842, living beside Edward, Michael, and Luke McHale and their families.
I have noticed there are several Tighe's in the Clencastle cemetery recordings, and a Tighe is still active in Our Lady of Lourdes Church. I have looked through the Crossmolina parish records, and the Belmullet records start too late for me.
What would you recommend for my next steps? Thanks for all your help.

M. Raycroft:
Welcome back!
Rathmore townland is actually in Crossmolina civil parish. Rathmore is a good 43 kilometers from Glencastle so I'm skeptical that the family was in Glencastle. I would concentrate on Crossmolina

I checked on Roots Ireland for Crossmolina and in addition to the 1831 record for Dorothy, there was an July 15th 1838 baptismal record (see link below) for a Tighe child parents James Tighe and Mary McHale of Rathmore. No name was shown so I'm confused. You can't have a baptism without a name. Did the priest fail to annotate the register? Was this the record for Mary or Jane?

Hi Roger -- and thanks for the quick response! Thanks too for finding our nameless child, although I'm not sure what to do with it either -- it could be Jane, but I'm not sure. Especially with this additional information, I agree, sticking with Crossmolina makes the most sense.
So following that up, I looked at the Tithe Applotment Books, and I find them confusing. James Tighe appears in two places, but neither seem to have any quantity of holdings listed -- just that the rents paid, in both instances is 1.1. Do you know what that means? I also see in Grenham's book that the Earl of Arran owned a lot of the land including Crossmolina. I don't believe any of that is on line, but if I ever get to Ireland (I'm still hoping!), would that be a good place to look?
Thanks for all your help. Any suggestions welcome!

His rent was one pound 10 shillings which is 1 and 1/2 pounds. As far as I can tell he had a fairly small holding maybe part of the land for Michael Flynn.

Dear MRaycroft: Hi, I am new to this site, so I'm not clear on what information you are looking for in your original post. If you are searching for descendants, rest assured that this marriage resulted in many many descendants in the U.S. and Canada. Of the four daughters: Mary married a Healy/Haley, Dorothy married a Judge, Anne married a Jordan and Jane married a Troy.
It has been passed down to us, that Mary McHale/MacHale Tighe was the niece of Archbishop MacHale/McHale. For some decades, some of the descendants of the McHale/Tighe marriage, here in the US and Canada (myself included) have been trying to determine which of the Archbishop's brothers was Mary's father. Your post above suggests it "may be" Martin. Would you be kind enough to clarify this. In Hillary Andrews' book, The Lion of the West, p287, she suggests that Martin died young and left two daughters. According to that source, these two were reputed to be reared by the Archbishop. I've also heard elsewhere that Mary MacHale travelled here in Canada or US with a John MacHale/McHale who may have been her brother (James Tighe had passed away). In any case the bottom line is, I'm trying to determine which of the Archbishop's brothers was Mary's father.

Hello R. Kennedy: And thanks for writing. I share your frustration, as I have also not been able to prove how Mary McHale Tighe was related to the archbishop. I have found on numerous ancestry charts that my Mary is Martin's daughter, but when I write to the authors I either get no answer or they say it was what they have been told. Hence, the "may".
As I imagine you know, the Kingston St. Mary's church census of 1844 has the widow Tigue living with or beside three McHales -- Edward, Michael and Luke. John, a teacher, is living close by 1861. We believe but have no proof that these are her brothers, but again have no proof.
I have a copy of the census I would be happy to send you as well a a copy of the Haley family tree written by Sr. M. Eucharia, who says that they are related to the Archbishop -- but again no proof.
I do not know of any of the Archbishop's family's descendants who have taken a DNA test, but I have and would be happy to share my gedmatch number. While I wrote this post looking for ancestors, I am also interested in descendants, and would be interested in seeing how you fit in. If you wish, you can email me directly, marybethraycroft@gmail.com. (I know there is a "marybetherie" out there who is also looking for the connection, but that's not me). I am descended from the Jordan line.

Dear M Raycroft:
Thank you for your response, it was very helpful to me. All I have to offer is independant corroboration that Mary Tighe/Tigue was the Archbishop's niece because I am descended from the Judge line. I visited Dorothy Tighe Judge's grandaughter (correct, not "great") years ago and she had always known this was the case - prior to the availability of internet resources and contacts such as we have been discovering. Since then no research has contradicted this claim, but instead records and independent sources have confirmed the trail up to here. I just wasn't sure which brother of the Archbishop's. Thank you for your contact info, look forward to comparing notes with you further to see if there's a way of shedding more light.

I just found this site by googling "Tighes in Kilcommon Mayo". I am also a descendant of Tighes/McHales. I am amping up my family history as I am leaving tomorrow to Salt Lake City for a week. If there is anything specific on our line you would like me to review while I am there let me know. I am searching for my Haley(Healy) Carey line as well and they are from Kilcommon Mayo as well. I have done dna with ancestry and familytree. I have not been able to figure out how to upload to gedmatch and hope the lds folks will help me with that. Ancestry has put me on a Mary McHale dna circle but it is pretty lonely. I also wish we could use dna to sort out this Archbishop McHale story. I have Sister Eucharias family history as well. This particular site is a bit difficult for me to figure out.

Hi Patricia: And welcome to the site. My experience here has always been very positive. The contributors and organizers are very helpful. And I do hope you enjoy Salt Lake City. I was there a couple of years ago, and found it most useful.
While it was great to find Dorothy and an unknown's baptismal record, I wish we could find Ann, Jane's and Mary's records. The big find would be of course to see James Tighe's and Mary McHale's marriage or even Mary's parents -- I just don't know how.
I have also done dna with familytree, and I think I see you as a match for me, but with a different email address. I will email your hotmail account and see if we can join forces that way.
Have a great week.
