i am a descendent of Michael Cain born in Mayo in 1830. Does anyone know anything of the family? I visited Mayo about twenty yeas ago and thought it was very beautiful. I am the only person in my extended family to have been 'back' and I am planning to return shortly. I just do not  really know where to start looking! Judith

  • My g'g'grandfather was Patrick Edward FOY (abt 1797 Co Mayo- d 1860 Lake County, IL, USA). The FOY family emigrated in 1848 most traveling in steerage of a ship to New York. The family did not all travel together. In the 1850 US Census, living in Pat FOY's household were his family plus Anna KANE b 1805, "sister" and James R KANE, "nephew" age 14, all b Ireland. Living next door was family of James ROBINSON w one of the FOY daughters age 7 living with them.  The FOY family were all b Co Mayo except for their youngest son and they lived at least some years in Carramore also in Rathkip and Ardnaree neighborhoods (now Ballina) before emigrating.  We have assumed that the father of James KANE died prior to their emigration in 1848, possibly famine-related, and think he may also have been named James if the boy was named for him. Anna Foy KANE disappears after 1850.  James KANE the son d 2 Mar 1934, Cook county, IL and is buried at Calvary Cemetery, Evanston, IL where we have many family members. Patrick FOY's wife was Catherine MANLEY/MUNNELLY (1808-1860) and there were other FOY-MUNNELLY marriages both in Mayo and in USA. Their son William FOY returned to Mayo, lived in Rathkip 1845. We have other family (FORD and MEER/MEARS) who also lived in  Ardnaree and Bunree.  KANE is sometimes CAIN in US records. We find James and Maggie KANE living in Solana County (nr San Francisco) 1888-1920, then they are back in Chicago until their deaths. There were other KANEs in McHenry IL nr where Patrick FOY family lived, but I don't know if they are connected.  Michael KANE + Bridget CASSIDY lived in Lanarkshire, Scotland 1850. A FOY cousin told me her family traveled back & forth to Scotland and perhaps the KANEs did also. We think they were brought into Co Mayo to work w flax and linen, but Pat FOY became a flax farmer and was a farmer in IL. Many of the children and grandchildren worked w fabric as dressmakers, tailors, upholsterers, which fits some of your KANE info.  Bridget KANE b 1840 IL was daughter of Francis KANE (1804 Ireland-1873) and Ann with 7 siblings. I do not know very much about the KANE family but there is also a KANE county abt 50 miles west of Chicago. I also found a KANE family near Pat FOY, with John KANE b abt 1822 Scotland, wife Ellen b 1821 Ireland;and children b Rhode Island Margaret 1854; James 1846; Born in IL were Frances b 1857; Mary 1859; William 1861. They lived very near my FORD-FOY family in Lakeview, Cook County (now Evanston) IL, and there is a good chance they are related.

  • jThank you for the responses I am a bit confused as I have read that Ardnaree was only part of Mayo in the late 1800s and my ancestors referred to being born in Mayo much earlier. Can anyone help? Jude

  • The borders of Mayo changed slightly in 1898, some of the eastern rural town and got added to Mayo, near Castleford. Most of Ardanee was in Mayo before that.

  • The Mayo-Sligo border used to run along the River Moy, right through the middle of the town of Ballina, which was very inconvenient and confusing. People living in the same place could be born or could die in 2 different counties, yet they never moved. Local residents petitioned the govt. to move the border over.so all of Ballina and environs would be in Co Mayo.  Now that was confusing too! Some people didn't know which county to say their ancestor was from, hence you will find differences that should not be of concern.  If you look at where the places are on a map it will make more sense, but sometimes you need to search for "Ardnaree history map" or "Ardnaree Mayo 1800 map" for example.  The same is true for lots of places.  Part of my FOY family gave "Carramore" as place of birth for church baptism or marriage, and there were 64 places named Carramore in Co Mayo! Eventually I was able to figure out this group of my family lived in a townland located about where Mt. Falcon Estate is, just south of Ballina. Later they moved into Rathkip, next to Ardnaree and siblings lived in Ballina. Others moved over to Bonniconlon in Sligo.  I have also learned that when they moved away and their children were called on to say where their ancestors were from (or tried to spell the name) they often made mistakes, or gave the name of a similar place instead. Some said "Ballywhatchamacallit".  Join the crowd of frustrated people!  Family surnames also vary and even the parish priests or person transcribing the record make mistakes.  Spelling just doesn't matter and nicknames are also used. My g'g'grand is Catherine MANLEY or MUNNELLY or MUNILY and sometimes she is Cate or Kitty. One of the many persons named Michael MUNNELLY became "Michael Lackey" because he lived over in Lacken.  My MEARS cousins are MEER and one family's name was changed to MYERS by the immigration officer in Maine, possibly because he couldn't understand their accent.  It is also MEAGHER, MEEKER, MAIRS. The best way to tell if someone is related to you is with an autosomal (male or female) dna test at any service; then you can upload your results to a site called GedMatch.com and if you have a match, they will tell you how many gen. back to your ancestor in common.  This can be a huge help, because the other person's family may have records you don't have.  Be aware that due to the random factor, cousins and even siblings do not match all the same people, so it will also help to have multiple people tested and that will increase the size of your database. There is a great blog where you can post a query called "Mayo Ancestors" Group at FaceBook.  Lots of people find answers there every day.
