Looking for James Gilmore (Gilmour) and or his wife Martha Matildah Smith Gilmore who may have lived near Ederney, Fermanagh county.  James born abt 1803, Martha 1807.  They lived at Knockaraven at one time.  Parents to 9 children, James, Anne, John, Eliza, William, Catherine, Isabelle, Frances, and Thomas.  James died abt 1847, Martha and children then left for America.  Children born between 1828-1847.  Any geneology info would be welcome.  Family visiting Ireland in that area in August.

  • There isn’t a townland named Knockaraven in the parish of Magheraculmoney. There are two townlands named Knockarevan in Co Fermanagh. One is in the parish of Inishmacsaint, the other in Kinawley. I looked at both in Griffiths Valuation but didn’t see any Gilmore households there. There is also a Knockaraven in the parish Dromore, Co Tyrone. There were several Gilmore households there in 1860, suggesting perhaps that this is the one your family may have come from. It’s a mile or so north of Dromore village. The modern Owenreagh RD goes through it.

You don’t say what denomination the family were but if Church of Ireland the Dromore baptism, marriage and burial records start in 1784. If Wesleyan Methodist then they have baptisms from 1832 and marriages from 1864. (Try the Church of Ireland for the marriage). There’s copies of both churches records in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast.

6 Gilmore farms in Knockaraven, Tyrone in the tithes 1834:

  • Hi farmerdaryl

Were your Gilmores from near Ederney from the same line as the James b 1848 married Nellie ended up in Nuckolls County Nebraska? He was the son of William and Nancy (Ramsey) Gilmore according to a tree on Ancestry. My Hemphill ancestors William John Hemphill b 1852 m. Margaret Kilpatrick in the home of that James in 1884 with James and Nellie Gilmore as witnesses. I am looking at the Hemphills near Ederney - in Stranahone - and wonder if your Gilmores might be those Gilmores?
