My great great grandmother, Delia Raftery, was born in Ballinasloe in about 1832 to Catherine Hardiman and Michael Raftery. I believe Michael Raftery owned a pub in Ballinasloe. Delia emigrated to New York with her two older brothers (John and William) and sister (Margaret) in about 1848. The family lived in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, and Delia moved to Manhattan when she married William Henry DeLacy, a harnessmaker from Tullamore, King's County. Any further information about the family in Ireland--or where to look for it--would be most welcome.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
Here is a link to the online parish register for Ballinalsoe and records start in 1820. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0324
I checked Roots Ireland and found four baptismal records for Raftery children in Ballinasloe. I located John, William, Margaret and Bridget. (Delia is a nickname for Bridget). Bridget was in 1832, however, her mother's name was shown as Mary. Maybe that was a mistake? I also noticed that the surname Maher was very prominent with the sponsors. Was that Catherine's maiden name rather than Hardiman?
Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you so much for your prompt reply--and for the link to the parish register and information on the Raftery children's baptisms. I'll pursue your excellent notion that Catherine might have been a Maher. Will let you know! Again, my thanks for your help. Ellen

Hi, Kathleen--Just saw your post about John Raftery. Would love to share information with you. What fun! Might be easier if you contacted me at Elleninwash@gmail.com. I have no Raftery pictures, but a lot of Delia's son George DeLacy and his family. Glad to share them. Look forward to hearing from you. Ellen Kane

So very interesting. Delia is my Great Great Grandmother as well and in my research I have often wondered if her mother was actually a Maher? My DNA test shows that I have Maher cousins and no Hardimans.
