SKELLYS AND GREENS

Hello, 

 I am fortunate that my gran was from this area and was able to share some information with me before she passed in 1988. We still have living cousins who now live over in Co. Meath. On one of my visits over Gran took me to her childhood homes and haunts and I do have a relationship with two of my mother's older cousins. 

We  have some knowledge of my great grandparents back to about 1859 but nothing beyond that time.  My living cousins do not have knowledge beyond that time either.  I would love to learn more about the Skelly and the Green families.

My ancestors lived just on the Cavan/Meath border so some records will indicate events in Cavan, others Meath. We also see some records stating Oldcastle and Munterconnaught, Cavan.

GREAT GRANDFATHER: Micheal Green born 1859, records state Oldcastle but another states Athboy. Not sure if this is the same or a different Michael Green. We don't know his parents names but think his father was also Michael Green. Cannot find evidence of siblings.

Served in the Meath Militia as a youngster then joined the regiment and went to the East Indies.
March 1877: joined 64th battalion, regiment 109, reg. number 1208 in Navan, Meath.
April 1883 1st Batt. Leinster Regt. in Cavan.
1901 Census show that he was also a labourer and postman as well as being in the Army Reserve after his marriage.
1906 Dies suddenly of lung infection in 1903 while with Army reserve.

GREAT GRANDMOTHER: Catherine Skelly, may have been born Dec. 1866 (not sure), baptized Jan. 1967 in Castlerahan.
Sponsors: Maria Skelly & Thomas Gillick Birth registered 24 Jan 1867 by father Thomas Skelly. 
Parents: Thomas Skelly and Ann Sheridan.

Catherine died in July 1939 in Clonasillagh, Co Meath (just over the border from Cavan)

Marriage  of Catherine Skelly and Michael Green: 13 April 1885, Kilskyre parish, diocese of Meath

Witnesses: Patrick Skelly & Margaret Nulty. Record states Catherine was age 19, a servant & spinster, living in Lisnagon.her father Thomas Skelly still alive. Record states Michael was age 25, a labourer & batchelor, living in Lisnagon. His father deceased.

After the marriage the couple lived in Ryefield, near Lough Ramor and had several children all born in Ryefield. 

1. Michael Joseph, 1886- Oct.1903. Died from accidental drowning. Meath Chronicle, 10 Oct. 1903 has an article on the accidental drowning. He is buried with his parents at Knocktemple Cemetary. 
2. Thomas, 1888-1924. Emigrated to Chicago 1911 and died there. Married Margaret Madden and had one son Thomas Jr. who died at age 91 in 2011.
3. Patrick, 1891-1969. Kells postman for many years.
4. John, 1893-1964
5. Catherine (Kitty), 1897-1972, married a Michael Smith.
Went to London during WWII and later emigrated to Perth, Australia and died there.
6. Anne, 1901-1983. Married Michael Grimes. Descendants are now over in Co. Meath area (Newgrange)
7. Mary (Mollie, my gran), 1903 - 1988. Went to London in 1920s, became a nurse. Died in Richmond, London.
8. Bridget (Bridie), 1906 - 1995. Married Late in life to James and moved near Drogheda, Co. Louth. 

My mother was born in London, 1930 married an American, had four childen, and we all now live in California and Washington States.
