James McHarg was born in Ireland.  He married Janet Boyd in Ireland.  Their children were born in Newtownards, County Down, Ireland.

James’ family emigrated to Glasgow, Scotland before the 1841 Scottish census.  All of the men were involved in the textile weaving industry; cotton, linen, wool and silk.

I am interesting learning who James & Janet’s parents and siblings were, more about their life in Ireland, their weaving education, their emigration and connecting with descendants of this couple.

The family later connects to Jane McChesney who, by census, was born in 1816 in Ireland.

Regards, P Fane

  • If James McHarg died after 1859, in Scotland, his death certificate should give you his parents names.

For his birth, you would need to rely on church records. You don’t say what denomination he was, but the most common in that area would be Presbyterian. There are copies of most of the surviving church records for Newtownards in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. A personal visit is required to view them. Not every church has records back to the era you need.

Meharg is probably more common in Ireland than McHarg but obviously it's the same name.  (Tradition has it that they were originally Grahams who were expelled from the Scottish Borders in the early 1600s for reiving. On arrival in Ireland, they reversed the spelling of their name to Meharg in protest at the move. Not sure how much truth there is in it, but it’s a commonly told story.)

There’s a few McHarg/Mehargs on this Co. Down site:

  • Elwyn, Thank you very much for this reply. The James Meharg of Newtownards, husbands of Janet Boyd ... are my gggparents.  The reference is GV - any idea what that stands for?

  • GV stands for Griffiths Valuation, but looking at the entry you mention the code is PR which is parish register. So the source of the information was Newtownards 1st Presbyterian church’s baptism and marriage records.
