Hi, I am looking for birth records for Edward Hart. All his records say he was born Gort, Galway. His birth was around1830s, he was RC, and named his first son John Francis and first daughter Maria. He emigrated to Australia in 1859.

Thank you

  • Unfortunately baptism records for the Catholic parish of Gort or 'Kilmacduagh & Kiltartan' only seem to go back to 1848. See the images of the registers for the parish on the National Library website.

There are several Hart/Harte baptisms around Co. Galway during the 1830s, the one closest to Gort that I found was that the baptism of a Mat Hart on the 22nd Jul 1834 in Kinvara parish, which was adjacent and to the north west of Gort parish, with parents S. Hart and M. Martin.

There are three entries for the surname Hart(e) in the area on Griffith's Primary Valuation dated 1855 for this area - all on Beagh civil parish, which covered part of the town of Gort and also townlands to the south of the town*. The names include a John Harte at Derry townland, Patrick Harte at Ashfield Demesne townland and another Patrick Harte at Lavally townland.

The Griffith's valuation can be searched on the free AskAboutIreland website, enter the surname (with the e) and filter by county and civil parish to narrow down the results.

*The other civil parishes which covered the town were Kilmacduagh & Kiltartan, with Kilbeacanty closeby to the south east.

  • Morning

I will pass to the Gort volunteer as she may be able to suggest some other avenues of investigation

    Best wishes

  • Thank you Sister. That does look positive and I like the fact Michael had a son John, the same as Edward. The shipping lists I have researched are the records in Melbourne, Australia. Edward, wife Catherine and daughter Maria arrived in Australia in 1859 on the Argonaut. Would records held in Ireland have any more details than those of ships logs that are held over here.

    Regards

  • Thank you again. Edward was married in Boston in 1856 but the records are very scant. I would love to know when he went to America, as a child or adult, with family or alone. He was back in Ireland late 1856 for the birth of their first child in Kings. I have tried to trace records there but no luck.

    Regards
