Dear All

Regarding: LAVELLE

This is as much me sharing my info with Lavelle descendants as it is a general plea-  to anyone who can corroborate my information or, indeed, to those who may know a whole lot more than me.

Facts

My g g grandfather was called James Lavelle b.1854 (approx) in Co. Mayo.

He left Co. Mayo and moved to Paisley, Scotland where he married a Mary Welsh b.1858. Mary Welsh’s parents were Edward Welsh and Bridget Mangan and they were from Mayo too.

A couple of things I picked up about James Lavelle b.1854… Firstly from the 1891 Census of Scotland he had a brother living with him called John Lavelle (born approximately 1873)

Secondly I know from his 1935 death certificate, that James Lavelle’s parents were Thomas Lavelle and Kate Lavelle (maiden name cited as Lavelle) – recorded as farm labourers.

I am the great grandson of their first child Michael Mathew Lavelle (b.1879) who himself moved to Manchester around 1910.

Their second child was James Lavelle b.1887 who moved to Cleveland, Ohio and married Anna Forry (from Mayo)

Guesswork.

So assuming James (b.1854) and John b.1873) really were brothers I searched on rootsireland.ie and found a John Lavelle born in 1873 to a Thomas and Kate Lavelle in Dooagh, Achill Island, Co. Mayo.

Using that information I found two other brothers: Pat Lavelle b.1865 Thomas Lavelle b.1870.

As civil registration didn’t become mandatory until 1864, I cannot find anything relating to James Lavelle’s birth in or around 1854. Nothing I can see on the recently published Catholic Parish records, which of course are not exhaustive.

Any Lavelle’s out there who trace back to a Thomas and Kate Lavelle?

Share the love!

Ed

  • Hi Ed . . . Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out . . .

I'm not sure I can help you . . as I am geographically far remove d from Achill // Mayo  . . . and not familiar with that area . .

    I found the presentation confusing . . . so . . I just ask a few questions  . .

    On ' Roots' . . when you brought up John's birth . . 28 Feb.1873 . .Parents Thomas // Kate. . .  did you notice a very small notation at the bottom . .

stating that ther was a Michael Lavelle present at the birth   ???

    Who was this Michael Lavelle . . . and why the notation . . . ???

    Was he Thomas's Father ???

If he was Thomas's father . . . then when you search 1901 Census . . for Michael lavelle;s in Mayo ( aged approx. 60+)

You will find a number of Achill Island . . Michael's  (see)

Cheers and thank you Eamonn for your kind reply, yes I did see that Michael Lavelle notation but can't explain it.

I don't know this John is certainly my g g grandfather's (James) brother, just that the year 1873 and parents' names fit with info I've confirmed on Scottish censuses and James' death certificate.

Interesting James' first child, born in 1879, was named Michael.

Thank you again for taking the time to respond.

    Kind regards, Ed.

        • Hello Ed,

This is my first time on this site and I have been trawling it for hours. I am sure I have seen a post on here from yourself that states you are related to Martin Mangan & Sarah Gavin and John Mangan & Catherine Lavelle I hope this is correct and I'm not wasting your time. All 4 of them are my 4 times Great Grandparents. Only yesterday, after nearly 12 years of researching did I find out my Great Great Grandfathers place of baptism and hopefully birth. Doocastle, Co Mayo.  I have been looking for years for 4 names, Mangan, Lavelle, Gallagher and Kennedy. They seem to have all left Clew Bay, Co Mayo for seasonal work in Paisley, Scotland and then came back to Achill. Year after year they repeated this, until I don't know when. Everyone seemed to settle in Paisley or so I thought!! Any information you have would be greatfully appreciated and anything I can let you know, please just ask. Helen.

        • Hi Helen,

Really interesting reading your post. Your great great grandmother called Bridget Mangan, whom did she marry and which of her children do you trace back to her through?

The names John Mangan and Catherine Lavelle may have been my Bridget Welsh (nee Mangan)'s parents... I only know them as John and Catherine Mangan...my Bridget Welsh (nee Mangan) moved to Paisley with Edward Welsh and had among other children, my great great great grandmother Mary Welsh b.1858.

          Best regards

          Ed

        • Morning Ed,

Sorry for the late reply, I know of Jacqueline we seem to find each other every few years!

My Mom went to Paisley a few years back to see family and she met up with one of the mutual cousins.

The Bridget in my tree married my Gt Gt Grandad, James Kennedy. I do know that he died in February 1916. Sudden Death, at the Paisley Gasworks. My Gt Grandad was John Kennedy and guess what? My Grandad was another James!! both born in Paisley.

Now Bridget's parents were Michael and Mary Mangan, and Mangan was Mary's surname before marriage. Mary's parents were John Mangan and Catherine Lavelle, all of them were born on Achill. I am aware that they had Michael and Patrick as well as Mary but thats where my research ends. I hit a brick wall years ago and felt defeated.

          Helen.

Hi!  I am always excited to see people post about the Lavelle family, especially when they post about those in Cleveland.  I have Lavelle ancestors in Cleveldn as well.  I still have to sift through all of the information you have posted, but I live in Sandusky, Ohio, and I attached my Lavelle info to this post. I hope we are able to connect!

Have you completed a DNA test?  If so, maybe we can discover if we are connected that way. I did 23andme, but I also put my information on some other free DNA sites.

Hope to hear back from you soon!

        • Hello, my name is Heather. I am searching for any familiy connections still on Achill Island.

My maternal grandmother was Bridget O'Malley (born in Keel (East) 5/12/1911, died 2/4/1973, her brothers were...John O'Malley born in 1907, Thomas O'Malley born in 1913, James O'Malley born in 1919).

Her parents were Bridget Lavelle (born in Keel 12/3/1878, died 1951) and Anthony O'Malley (born in Paisley, Scotland 5/28/1879, died 1972).

My great grandmother Bridget Lavelle's parents were Bridget Malley and Thomas Lavelle, married in Keel (unfortunately I have no dates).

My great grandfather Anthony O'Malley's parents were John Malley and Mary McNamara (again, I have no more dates).

I would greatly appreciate ANY help with my search. Thank you, kindly.

        • Hi Heather,

Achill has loads of O’Malleys, Grace O’Malley or Granuaille being your famous historical relative. I found my great great grandparents grave by going to Slievemore graveyard when I visited. Perhaps worth checking historicals at the free website https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp and search your relatives who would have registered events at Westport. • Tina, i have Lavelle’s in my tree. I wonder if the Peter Lavelle you have in your document might be a sibling of Ellen Lavelle Ruddy. You said you did Ancestry DNA and 23 and me. I wonder if we are related.

Do you also have a Peter in your tree?  I did not do Ancestry DNA but I did do 23andme.  I have a GEDmatch number of M685510, if you also put your information on GEDmatch.  My email is irisheyes95@yahoo.com if you don't feel comfortable sharing publicly.  I hope we make a connection!
