Hello,

I wonder if anyone could help me find the grave stone of my Great, great grandparents John & Mary Moran in Addergoole grave yard which is not far from the village of Garrafrauns. This graveyard is not on the Co. Galway grave yard website yet and Milltown Heritage Centre hope to index it at some stage.

As I can't find the civil death registration nor a probate record for John Moran, my only hope of finding out when he died would be on his gravestone.

He died sometime between 1897(as he is the one who registered his daughter's death Margaret M. Clarke) and the 1901 census,  his wife is a widow by then. His wife Mary died probably 1907.

His daughter's husband Thomas Clarke married into the Moran homestead so he could be included on their gravestone?

According to family, Mary Clarke nee Moran died on the birth of her second child Margaret M. Clarke  which would have been 21st June 1896, however the civil registration record states Margaret M died September Q 1897? (Ref: 4 272) in Quinaltagh, Garrafrauns, Dunmore, Co. Galway, Ireland or is it possible she died giving birth to a third child and the third child died with the mother??? There are two Clarke children John & Bridget born in 1897 in the Tuam district.

Thomas Clark went on to remarry so I don't know if he would have had a separate grave for his second wife Bridget Kenny.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated, many thanks in advance,

Carmel Clarke

  • Hi Carmel

Myself and my a helper called out to the graveyard on Monday evening. Unfortunately I don't have much to report. There are a lot of stone markers in the old graveyard alongside actual headstones (some of the latter are legible, some not).

I could only find one headstone for a Thomas Clarke and one for a Moran. It may be the case that the headstone is no longer legible. Some of the writing on many of them has been eroded almost flat to the stone. We also checked the new graveyard across the road but they were quite recent (1930s onwards)

I attach all the photos we took and can call back any time if you need me to, it's between my house and my mum's so near a cup of tea afterwards!

    Best wishes

  • Hi Clare,

This is a fablous find thank you ver much and has opened the door to break down some brick walls on this side of my family tree. They are all mine I believe, Thomas Clarke was Mary Moran's husband, Laughil is correct as that is the townland on my GG Grandparents marriage record (even though their homestead is actually in the townland of Quinaltagh) and the Morans from Cloonbrisk were my GG grandmother's sister's family and they had 3 children Andrew, Peter & Tom. (there were more on census, perhaps they died or emigrated). so now I can go on to find death & probate records with this new information & perhaps eventually piece them all together!

A hundred thousand thanks to you & your friend, I really do appreciate this so much.

    God bless you both,

    Carmel

  • Hi Clare or anyone else around,

On Michael Joseph Ruane's death record in USA and who married Margaret Mary Clarke from Quinaltagh, it states that he was from Milltown and his parents were Michael Ruane & Bridget Varley. I could only find one Ruane couple of a Michael and a Bridget in that area on the probate records from a townland "Belmont" which it appears is near Milltown, Co. Galway, am I right? Would this family be near enough to  Milltown to be buried in Addergoole grave yard?  (I'm not asking you to go there again). There appear to have been many Ruane families in the Milltown area at the time of the census however I can't find Michael nor his mother Bridget on the 1901 nor 1911 census. I wonder if you would know if there are still Ruane families in this townland of "Belmont"?

Thank you in advance and any help greatly appreciated,

    Kindest regards,

    Carmel Clarke

  • Hi Maria

This link will take you to a map that shows Belmont (National School) alongside the neighbouring townlands - it is close to Milltown so likely there were buried in Addergoole graveyard.

I will take a spin up there later this week and see what I can find for you and pass along any photos.

  • Thanks a million Clare, that is really very kind of you, I was just thinking that if there were no Ruanes there in that townland back then it is more than likely that there are none now, more than a 100 years on so perhaps a waste of time going there? and perhaps Bridget Ruane nee Varley returned to her home village after her husband died, just a thought.

Thank for the link to the Belmont school, I found it very interesting. I can't understand why I didn't get these results when I was searching for this townland, obviously I have a lot to learn!

    Greatly appreciated your kindness clare,

    Kindest regards,

    Carmel

    Hi

The graveyard at Kilclooney is actually digitised so you can search here. I include below the photos I took the other day - you will know better than I if they are relevant.

  • Hi Pat.

As you can see from my inital post my John & Mary Moran nee McGrath are from the village of Quinaltagh, Garrafrauns, Dunmore, Co. Galway. Mary McGrath had a sister Margaret who married Martin Moran & lived in the next village called Cloonbrisk. It is possible that Martin Moran was a brother to my great grandfather John Moran and that he may have married into the McGrath

home- stead in Cloonbrisk, however no family have been able to confirm this to date. Martin Moran & Margaret McGrath had at least three children Andrew, Peter and Tom.

If you think we both share the same Moran family, I would be delighted to hear from you and share all I have on this family, perhaps you could give me an email address to contact you.

Many thanks in advance & kindest regards,

    Carmel Clarke
