I am again traveling to Ireland first week in May to do another self-drive family research trip.  Plan to be in Mayo for a couple of days.   I have been extremely fortunate to have found a lot of info. on my family and met cousins on both sides of my family, but I am still vexed by two brick walls along the way that might reap some more connections for my 2nd great grand uncle PATRICK J. MALONE (about 1850-1927) paternal branch in Ballina, Co. Mayo.

I am still trying to locate descendants from one of his sons PATRICK T. MALONE (about 1877) born in Ballina, Co. Mayo,  His parents were PATRICK J. MALONE & first wife Bridget Mary Kilcullen.   I found some info. that Patrick of same age might have immigrated to US about 1898 or 1900, but it is hard to confirm where yet another Patrick Malone ended up from the 1900 or 1910 US Census.  On other hand, I have also found a Patrick Malone living with wife’s uncle Anthony Connelly on Thomas St. in Castlebar with his wife Mary and son Patrick J. and daughter Bridget Agnes. in 1901 census.  Thought this was promising with a son named after Patrick T's father in Ballina. Sadly he might have died before 1911 census in Castlebar. Signs of his family in Castebar and nearby seems to have disappeared. But since there are so many Patrick Malones who did not always use middle initials or provide parent info, my specific Patrick T. Malone has been hard to find after that.  Be great to find a living descendant of Patrick T, possibly still in Ireland.

Since I am posting anyway I thought i would mention I am also searching for US connections to his half-brother FRANCIS "FRANK" WILLIAM MALONE (abt. 1885), a son of PATRICK J. MALONE of Ballina and his second wife Mary Muffeny McCarthy. He attended Blackrock and was there during 1901 census.  Found on Ancestry that a Frank Malone apparently immigrated to US around 1908, but I have not been able to confirm for certain where he went in the US and where he died.  A Social Sec. doc I found has some very close ID info. but claim he was born in New York. Census info. supports this and a mother (who would have died earlier in Ireland) still living with this NY family.  I was told by a DILLON-MALONE cousin that he was a Lieutenant in the military (US?) and there was a obituary in the "Western People"  newspaper in Ballina that noted he died in US around 1968.  I have not found this obit.  Fortunately I have connected with my many DILLON-MALONE cousins originally from Ballina who were step-siblings & step-cousins of Frank and Patrick T. and descendants of my 2nd great grand uncle (shop proprietor, harbor master and cathedral lay leader) PATRICK J. MALONE and his third wife MARY ELLEN DILLON.

Any other leads on either of Patrick J's sons PATRICK T. and FRANCIS/FRANK would be appreciated.  Thanks!  Slan!

  • THANKS Roger!  I realized I posted some of this XO info. here from my memory.  Below is an updated post with dates and more info. for both PATRICK T. MALONE and FRANCIS WM. MALONE.

"I am still ttrying to locate an descendants from PATRICK T. MALONE (about 1877) born in Ballina, Co. Mayo,  His parents were PATRICK J. • In my tree I have some MALONEs: Francis J MALONE b 7 Jul 1855, christening 5 Aug 1855. This family emigrated to Brock Twp., Ontario, Canada where other children were born. He married Catherine MCCABE (1868-1952) in Ontario; he d 1929 and was buried St. Malachy's, Vroomanton, Brock Twp. Churchyard.  His parents: Patrick MALONE (1821-1898)+Sarah CAVANAGH (1824-1884) who married 22 Oct 1848 Oshawa, St. Gregory Mission, ON, Canada.  Patrick b Quebec, Canada; Sara b Scarborough West, York, ON, Canada. Parents of Patrick: Michael Patrick MALONE (1786-1862)+Mary CURTIN (1795-1887).  Michael Patrick b abt 1786 Patrickswell, Co Limerick, Ireland.  I am interested in this family because Alice K MALONE (1899-1967) married John James MANLEY (1899-1989) of Uxbridge, ON, Canada, whose g'mother was Rosanna "Ellen" DILLON (1843-1911)...her husband's father John MANLEY was b 24 Jun 1842 Co Mayo, Ireland; he d Uxbridge ON.  There was a "Frank" in the MANLEY family. Some of the MANLEY/MUNNELLY family lived in Prescot, Leeds, ON.  We are missing the ancestor link, but all the MANLEYs and MUNNELLYs in Co Mayo appear to be related.  My g'g'grandmother Catherine MANLEY/MUNNELLY m Patrick Edward FOY...all b Co Mayo, lived Carrowmore, then in Ballina for several yrs before they emigrated. More info in my tree at Ancestry.com.  Be sure to remember spellings of all names will vary from record to record, MALONE may also be MALLON, MALONEY, etc. and it doesn't mean it's a diff. family.

  • Thank you for your reply!  Since I know for certain where he was born (Ballina, Co. Mayo) and who his parents were  PATRICK J. MALONE and MARY MUFFENY MCCARTHY, it appears we are related to different Frank's.   Thanks for the reminder about different spellings of surname.  I have caught a couple of them due to misspelling by census taker or transcribers of docs and even had to acknowledge the hyphenated DILLON-MALONE cousins were part of my ancestry tree.  LOL

It would appear with what you said you would have a strong possibility of digging into those Ballina & Kilmoremoy records, if you have not yet done so.  On some of the newly available parish records you might find a reference to Rev. Fr. PATRICK MALONE as a priest in Ballina, Bellmullet, Glencastle, and Lacken, Killala parishes.  Father Pat is my 2nd great grand uncle & brother of my 2nd great grandfather JOHN MALONE orginally from Claggarnagh, Glenhest, Addergoole, Co. Mayo.  Their father was PETER MALONE (about 1810) who married a MARY O'DONNELL and lived in Claggarnagh.   Wonder if your PATRICK (1821) could have been a brother if from Mayo.

There is also a great colleagial Mayo Genealogy Group on Facebook that also might help you sort out all your Manleys, etc. in Mayo.   My PATRICK J. MALONE's third wife was a MARY ELLEN DILLON.  My DILLON-MALONE cousin tells me she was part of a big family who sadly frittered away their wealth.  But there might be a family connection there for you.

    Thanks again!  Slan!  Tom

  • Tom,

I have dna matches to DILLON, but am not (so far) a MALONE, just have the info.  Yes, I belong to the MUNNELLY and to the Co Mayo groups on Facebook. I have dna match to MCCARTY, GALLAGHER, FERGUSON & more.  I am FORD, FOY, MANLEY/MUNNELLY, MEARS/MEER, NEALON, NAUGHTON, all fr Mayo.  One of my MUNNELLY cousins was fr Belmullet, most from Ballina & neighborhoods.

Thank you for your interesting info,

  • Yes!  THANK YOU so much for taking time to look and posting.  I have visited Ballina Leigue Cemetery and have located the graves and these docs previously.   I am aware of their connections/relations to the other two families and half-siblings sired by their common father Patrick J. Malone, including the Dillon-Malone clan.

I am primarily stumped, as are my Dillon-Malone cousins with whom I communicate, on verifying what happened to them both AFTER they left Ballina as young men.  I was still hoping to locate a direct line descendant of the Patrick Malone, (if this is my Patrick T, Malone) who might have lived in Castlebar during 1901 Census with the Connelly's (wives Uncle/Aunt) with his wife and two children while I am visiting Mayo May 4, 5 and am of May 6.  Wil communicate with Castlebar library to see if they have more info.  I am looking forward to leaving on my 5th resarch trip to Ireland from Boston May 1 and sadly returning May 9. Thanks again for trying!  My best!!!
