Hello,

I am researching Wixteds from Newport, Co. Tipperary and across the line in Murroe/Boher Co. Limerick. My family ended up in Danbury and Newtown, Connecticut, USA.

I would love to connect with anyone searching the same line.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I checked to see if we had any prior Wixted messages and there was on over three years ago and there is a connection with Newport Tipperary.

  • Thank you for responding. I am hoping to find the marriage of Margaret Troy born about 1799 possibly in Newport, Tipperary or Murroe Limerick and (Thomas?) Wixted. It is presumed that Mr. Wixted died before Margaret and her many children emigrated to Danbury, CT USA in the 1850's. Margaret Troy Wixted died in 1886.  Some of her children born in Limerick were

    John b. 1835

Mary b. 1837 married Jerry or Jeremiah Carey, also from Murroe Limerick in Newtown, CT

    Michael b. 1839

    Patrick. b. 1841

    Thomas J. b.1844

Can anyone help with this marriage record and confirming the name of Margaret Troy's Wixtead husband?

  • Hi, Jeannine-

Margaret Troy was my Great-Great-Grandmother.  One of my Danbury cousins called my tonight, as she is getting ready to go to Ireland in April.  She was looking for ideas and/or info.  She will be looking for records such as the one you spoke of.  I'll keep you posted if I find something out.

Margaret's son Michael was my Great-grandfather.  When they came to Danbury, they built a house at 014 South Street (Route 302).  My grandfather and father both grew up there.  After the war, the road through the property got paved, and it was named Wixted Avenue.  That is where I grew up.

According to my aunt, the siblings that came over with Margaret included Johanna (born 1840), but  no mention of Thomas.

Also- I don't know the name of Margaret's husband, either.  I hope to find this out soon!

Let me know if you find out anything, but also if you need stateside info, as maybe I'll have something.

    Thanks,

    Michael E. Wixted

  • Hello Cousin Michael and other friends,

Thank you so much for the help and information. I am wondering about the surname Terane in that area of Murroe. I find a baptism for Patrick Wixtead on 23 March 1839, son of Tom Wixtead and Margt. Terane. Could this be our Margaret Troy? The reason I ask, is because this is the second time I have run into the surname Terane when I had thought it was Troy. (On another family line.) Can anyone shed any light on this?

I wish your cousin well on her trip! I would love to hear what she discovers and see photos if possible! That trip is on my bucket list too. My personal email is jean9weg@yahoo.com

    Thanks again,

    Jeannine

  • Hi all,

I've put a huge but not exhaustive list of Wixteds up on Wikitree, mainly from Murroe and Newport. I'm still working my way through findmypast.ie. However, I notice a few above I didn't spot as the names are not transcribed correctly so I've added them.

  • I too am looking at the Troys from Murroe. If you look at Griffiths valuation a Margaret Wixtead leased land in Ballyvorheen Abington from landlord Patrick Troy.

I am tracing the Troy/ Murphy/ Glesson links to Nenagh and other areas in Tipperary.

  • Hello Jeannine, and hello Michael Wixted, I am also searching for the Wixted family in Co. Tipperary, specifically a Maura Wixted. She was born around 1935-36 in Co. Tipperary, but I don’t know which town. By 1966 she was married (her married name was Kirby) and living in Jamaica, Queens, New York City. I don’t know if she was married in Ireland or the US. There seems to be a strong Wixted presence in Newport (based on the 1911 census). I have posted a separate message on this website, but I just discovered your post and replies. Any help or information on her would be greatly appreciated. I thank you kindly in advance. -Emmee
