John W. Butler (Probable middle initial stands for William.)

John's mother is Mary Butler born in Ireland 1795. Came to the USA with Margaret Buckley Butler, John's wife, and the four daughters born in Ireland in 1854 by ship.  The 1855 New York State Census states that John, the husband had lived in the USA for two years.  That means he entered the USA about 1853.  The rest of the family stated in the 1855 census that they had been living in the USA just one (1) year, making their entry date to the USA 1854.  Margaret the wife, daughters, Johanna, Mary, Ellen/Eleanor,  Maggie(Bridget), and the mother of John, Mary Butler.

In 1855 they were living in Evan Township in Erie County, New York.  Apparently they were very poor, even though that John, the father, was working for the railroad, as they are listed on the 1855 NY Census as living in a shanty.

NEW KEYS:

            A.  IF THE 1855 NEW YORK CENSUS IS CORRECT JOHN THE FATHER

ENTERED THE UNITED STATES IN 1853.  NOT SURE IF HE ENTERED

                  THROUGH THE USA OR CANADA.

            B.  WIFE, MARGARET, CHILDREN (FOUR DAUGHTERS), AND JOHN'S

MOTHER (MARY BUTLER B-1795 IRELAND) ENTERED THE USA

IN 1854 OR APPROXIMATELY A YEAR LATER THAN JOHN

ENTERED.  ALSO NOT SURE IF THEY ENTERED THROUGH THE

                  USA OR CANADA.

            C.  JOHN BUTLER, THE FATHER, WAS BORN ABOUT 1816.  HIS GRAVE

MARKER NEAR WAUKON, IOWA THAT STATES HE WAS BORN ON

FEBRUARY 15, 1791 IS NOT CORRECT AS HIS MOTHER WAS

LISTED AS BEING BORN IN IRELAND IN 1795.  HIS FIRST USA

CENSUS IN 1860 STATES THAT HE WAS 44 YEARS OLD WHICH

WOULD MAKE MORE SENSE AS THIS WOULD MAKE HIS MOTHER

ABOUT 21 YEARS OF AGE IN 1816.

            D.  MARY (POSSIBLE MIDDLE NAME "FRANCIS") MARRIED A

MICHAEL JAMES O'BRIEN.  THE O'BRIEN FAMILY MOVED THE

SAME OHIO COUNTY THAT THE BUTLER'S LIVED IN

THE 1860 AND 70'S. I PERSONALLY THINK THESE FAMILIES KNEW

EACH OTHER WHEN THEY LIVED IN IRELAND.

THE O'BRIEN FAMILY SEEMS TO HAVE COME FROM SOUTH TIPPERARY.

            E.  MARY BUTLER THE LISTED MOTHER OF JOHN BUTLER DOES NOT

SHOW UP IN THE 1860 USA CENSUS LIVING WITH THE BUTLER

FAMILY IN OHIO.  SHE MUST HAVE DIED, BUT I HAVE NO

INFORMATION AS TO HER DEATH.  IF SHE  DIED IT MUST HAVE

BEEN IN NEW YOURK STATE, AND THEY LIVED IN DUNKIRK,

ERIE COUNTY, NEW YORK UNTIL THEY LEFT FOR OHIO

IN THE EARLY MONTHS OF 1860 BEFORE THE USA FEDERAL CENSUS WAS TAKEN.

            F.  JOHANNA BUTLER THE FIRST BORN CHILD AND WAS MARRIED IN

DECEMBER OF 1857 IN DUNKIRK, NEW YORK.  A WITNESS TO THE

WEDDING WAS A JAMES BUTLER.  THIS MAY BE THE SAME JAMES

BUTLER THAT WAS THE GODFATHER OF JOHANNA AT HER   BAPTISM.

THIS JAMES BUTLER MAY BE THE BROTHER OF JOHN  W. BUTLER.

THIS JAMES BUTLER LIVED IN DUNKIRK, NEW YORK AND WAS BORN

IN IRELAND AND HIS WIFE WAS NAMED JOHANNA.  THIS WITNESS

TO THE WEDDING WAS BORN IN IRELAND ABOUT 1820.  HE MAY BE

A COUSIN OF JOH BUTLER OR MAYBE EVEN HIS YOUNGER BROTHER.

HE AND HIS WIFE HAD 4 DAUGHTERS, ALL BORN IN NEW YORK STATE.

NAME  ARE VERY CLOSE TO JOHN W. BUTLER'S CHILDREN.

WIFE--  JOHANNA BUTLER - WIFE BORN ABT.  1830

                                    IRELAND-- (no maiden name)

                                    CHILDREN:

                                    1. JOHANNA BUTLER BORN  1853 NEW YORK

                                    2. MARY BUTLER    BORN  1855  DUNKIRK, NEW YORK

                                    3. KATE BUTLER     BORN 1859   DUNKIRK, NEW YORK

                                    4. MARGARET BUTLER BORN 1862  DUNKIRK, NEW YORK

This is about all the new information I have on the Butler family from Tipperary.

  • Clare Doyle----  Could you or anyone who reads this please see if there is a Briget Butler buried in the church cemetery in the town of Bansha.  I see on Google Maps that there is a cemetery next to the church.  John Butler, Margaret Buckley Butler, and Mary Butler, John's mother, and 4 daughters left Ireland in 1853 and and came to the USA.  I have found five daughters that were baptized in Bansha/Kilmoyler Parish.  The 4th born daughter was named Bridget Butler.  She was baptized June of 1851.  She was the child that did not come with the family to the USA.  The father John entered the states a year before( 1853 ) the rest of the family.  His wife and four daughters, and his mother Mary entered a year later in 1854.  I am assuming that the child Bridget died between 1851 and 1854.  I am also assuming that she would be buried in the church cemetery sometime between thos dates.  I would apperciate help with this problem.  In my first post about the Butler and Buckley families from the Bansha area I have heard nothing.  I am sure there are still Butler's and Buckley's in the area southeast of Tipperary City.  Maybe I need some IRISH luck!

  • Hi Bernard,  The headstone inscriptions for Killadriffe are partly done by a local historian.  I think they are on  www.historicgraves.ie as well.  If you google parish of Bansha/Kilmoyler lots of lovely heritage material on the Parish.  I will try and find out the names of the other Graveyards in the Parish.  Will try and do more research on this for you, if you email me  mallow1@irelandxo.ie

      Regards.   Christina.
