Hello everyone.

I’m trying to find my ancestor John McGauchie, who was born in County Down around 1805. He moved to Dumfriesshire, Scotland, as a young man, and worked as a labourer. By 1821 he was married to a Helen Smith. Their children’s names (all born and baptised in Dumfriesshire) were Agnes, William, Joseph, John, James, Robert and Mathew, in that order.

I would love to find out who John’s parents were and where in County Down he came from.

Apologies for the long delay in getting back to you. I haven't been able to locate any relevant records for John or for others in the Family. Does his marriage record give any other indication of place of birth besides Co. Down?

    Best wishes

  • Dear Clare,

Unfortunately I haven't found the marriage record, only the baptisms for the children. The reference to County Down came from the 1851 Census for Scotland.

    Regards,

  • Dear Iain

You could keep checking the Early Marriage and Birth Index periodically to see if there are any updates on that database. Additional names are added each week/month. You can search it here:

Claire Santry's Blog also gives a good overview of newly released sources:
