    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Michael Duffy and Catherine Regan were married February 9, 1863 in the RC church in Charlestown. Presumably, Catherine was from that parish. Michael and Catherine and their children lived in Clooncarha/Clooncara townland in Kilmovee parish. It will be very difficult to pinpoint the children and grandchildren of the Duffys mentioned in your message because Duffy is such a common name in the parish. One of my great-grandmothers was Mary Duffy (1858-1939) from Magheraboy townland. Many of the Duffy descendants ended up in the Philadelphia area including my grandmother.

There is a Facebook page run by Kathleen Fry called Ancestry By Fry and she is a descendant of Duffys from Kilmovee and I know there is a Clooncarha/Clooncara connection. You may want to ask to join the group and look for past messages which likely will give you some family clues. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1536699056550724/

I'm the parish liaison for Kilmovee parish. I grew up in Philadelphia and live in Maryland.

Let me know what questions you have.

  • Hello ekrichten,

It is unlikely that the Michael Duffy noted in the Griffith Valuation is your Michael, though there may be a connection to keep a note of. The name Celia which you have identified born abt 1872 is not a common Christian name in the parish and no doubt is that of a grandparent passed down.

The census search forms have a Annie Fitzgerald of Clooncan, Ballinlough, Co Roscommon http://censussearchforms.nationalarchives.ie/search/cs/details.jsp?id=46552 who was formerly Annie Duffy of Clooncarha. Interestingly her parents are shown as Michael and Celia Duffy of Clooncarha. There is a strong case that your Michael was the brother of Annie Fitzgerald and that their parents were Michael and Celia Duffy.

  • Mary Duffy born 1866 was my grandmother.  She died in Philadelphia in 1941. I know that she and two of her sisters

Ellen (1868) and Ann (1872) also emigrated to Philadephia.  I have their information but am trying to locate any of the other siblings as listed above who may have remained in Ireland..

I was born in Philadelphia and now live in central Pennyslvania.

I checked the 1901 census for Clooncarha and 14 of the 33 households were Duffy households and I did not see any Charles Duffy records and the only Edward Duffy had different parents.

Can I suggest that you look into an autosomal DNA test. You will likely match a number of Duffys.and descendants of some of the siblings of Mary mentioned in your message.
