Meherin Family

Jane,

The surname Meherin is not common. Looking at the 1901 census for Galway there are 16. Some spelled Mehern, some Meherin and others Meheran. If you search under “Meh*” you’ll get the lot up.

The idea of a single “correct” spelling is not one out ancestors would have understood. Expect the spelling to vary all the time, often according to the whim of the person collecting the information.

Hi Jane,

My great grandparents were Mark Meherin and Eleanor Murphy. They lived in San Francisco and had nine children. My grandmother, Rosamond Meherin was their eldest daughter. Mark had a brother who lived in Pismo Beach and there is a historic home there called the Meherin House. I have also tried to find the Meherin surname.and could not find any when I visited ireland. The town they came from was Loughrea in Galway. I am pretty sure we are cousins. The youngest son Joseph had the middle name Minton and now I know how he got it and can add more ancestors to my tree. I would love to hear more from you. Are you in the US?

Hi Val, I do see where Rosamund Meherin married Tom Fallon, Sr. I have written a chapter on our Meherin family in my father's family history book. I wrote this book in 1998 and was in touch with several of our cousins; some in S.F. and others in San Luis Obispo County where Michael Meherin lived. Yes, I live in Michigan, originally born in S.F. I would enjoy being in touch with you Val...we are definitely cousins! Michael was 10 years older than Mark (your great grandfather).Best wishes, Jane

I have your family on my tree as I was researching it recently due to a connection with a distant cousin 

The Meherins were indeed from the Loughrea area - I have them in Tynagh  
 
Anne Meherin Keighrey's son Willie Keighrey married Mary Jane Breheny (who is my cousin's husband's relative)

My great great grandparents were Mark Meherin and Eleanor Murphy. My grandmother, Rosamond Meherin Fallon, was Patrick's sister. She was the eldest daughter. I have some photos of the Meherin family. I have memories of Grandma Roe, Aunt Alma, Aunt Elenore, Aunt Cap (Loretta) Uncle Markand Uncle Joe.

Hi,  My great grandmother was Mary F Meherin, born about 1867 in Massachusetts and died March 14 1925 in San Francisco.  She married William Langley, date unknown.  She supposedly had two brothers, Bert and Peter, both born in Massachusetts and lived in San Francisco.  Peter was born in 1868 and died in San Francisco in 1922.  I know her son William F Langley was born in California in 1885, so she was there by that time.  

That is all the information I have regard my Meherin ancestors.   From other posts on this board, I see that they were most probably from Galway, and seem to have gravitated to San Francisco.

That is exciting news for me, as I have run into a dead end on finding any further information.

Can you fill in the family tree between yourself and your great grandfather Michael J Meherin?  Thanks!  I'm a decendent of his brother Mark M Meherin.  I think I have seen a copy of your book.  It was once in my possession but I think my dad has it now.

Does anyone have an information about Thomas J Meherin (11 Oct 1833-7 Jan 1913) and any siblings he may have?  And what his relationship is to Mark M Meherin (1795-1859)?  I found some family paperwork that has been passed down to me and I have the Family Group Record for his grandson William Frederick Meherin (1904-1977).  I'm trying to tie that side of the Mehering family to my side.  Thanks!
