We are visiting Ireland in June and have found records for Kay's GGrandfather and his family. He was George Johnston, born Nart in 1862 and died at Slieveroe in 1919. He married Annie Caulfield in Kilmore Parish Church, March 30th 1893. The couple lived in Slieveroe (house 12 in the 1911 census) had three Children, Gertrude Elizabrth Esther,  1894 - 1976,, William 1899-1967, and Annie Olivia 1901 - 1994. Annie senior and the three children, emigrated to Invercargill, New Zealand in 1921, two years after George died.

We have found baptism records for the three children from the Trinity Church, Stranoodan (C of I) which still exists, but now a private home. It would be good to find the home of George and Annie in Sliveroe when we visit if it still exists. We will be in Monaghan on June 11 and 12 and morning of the 13th June.

  • One option for you is to look up the revaluation records for Slieveroe which are held in the Valuation Office in Dublin. See:

    http://www.valoff.ie/en/Archives_Genealogy_Public_Office/

If you look the farm up there you should get the plot number. You can then search the Griffiths on-line maps for that townland, which record all the plot numbers, to see where it was. The modern L2500 ruins through the middle of the townland but unless anyone locally today knows where the farm was, you may need the plot number to locate it correctly.

Ignore the house numbers on the 1901 & 1911 censuses which were just the enumerators’ private numbering system and which don’t relate to any other set of records or modern house numbers (though there probably aren’t any of those in Slieveroe).

  • I am interested to read that Annie emigrated to New Zealand in 1921, I'm wondering if other members of the family followed her.

Also I would like to get confirmation on  the parents of Anne Jane Pollock, born around 1846, married to William Henry Johnston, son of Christopher Johnstone. I know Anne Jane's father was Alexander Pollock. Was her mother Elizabeth Spiers?,

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
