What denomination were your family? (If Protestant, they are more likely to have originated in Co Down).

Yes Elwyn...It says on the cencus from Ireland but attendended the Church of Scotland....I assume that is Protestant....We Believe that Sarah Mcneil came to Canada latter on and Re-Married over here...David did not come with her so I am thinking he may have died in Ireland before 1861...

If your family attended the church of Scotland then I’d say they lived in Co. Down. Co. Down was heavily settled by Scots. Indeed they would form the majority of the population there, whereas Galway had hardly any. Church of Scotland is Presbyterian, so I would say you need to search Presbyterian records around Ballynahinch, Co. Down to find them.

Statutory birth and death registration didn’t start in Ireland till 1864 so you won’t find birth or death certificates for your family but you might find baptisms and marriages. (Presbyterians generally don’t keep burial records, and so unless there’s a gravestone you are unlikely to find nay record of David’s death if he died in 1861 or earlier.

1st Ballynahinch Presbyterian church only has records from 1841 onwards; 2nd Ballynahinch has baptisms from 1829 but marriages only from 1845 & 3rd Ballynahinch has records from 1820. They are not on-line anywhere so far as I am aware. However there are copies in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. A personal visit is required to view them. If you can’t get there yourself, you might need to use a researcher.

I have some information that may be of interest to you...I believe that I am related to Sarah Small, she would have been my great great grandmother. As I understand it, her first husband, David Small, died, although I'm not precisely sure when that was. Sarah Small (born Macneill) left Ireland (presumably during the famine) and remarried my great great grandfather, James Findlay, also from the County Down, Ballynahinch area. They married in Ayr, Scotland, on March 10, 1850, at Colmonell parish. Around the same time, Sarah's parents, the Macneills, emigrated to Canada with her two children and settled in the Pontiac County area of the Province of Quebec. Sarah and James Findlay stayed in Scotland for a few years and had a son born in Ayr, Scotland, also named James. They emigrated to Canada and settled in the same area of Quebec as Sarah's parents and other children. James Findlay  the second was my father's grandfather! There are still Findlays and Macneills living in this area.

Hello my name is Dale Small. I live in Ottawa Canada. My Great Great Grandfather is the David Small that you are inquiring about. He was born in 1817 and died around 1847. He was married to Sarah McNeill born in 1815 and died in 1900. They were from Ballynahinch  Co. Down. They had two children, David and Robert. They came to Canada with John McNeil and Sarah Murray. David was 12 years old when he came to Canada. Both died in 1927. John McNeil was born in 1784 and died in 1861 and Sarah Murray was born in 1784 died unknown. They settled in Bristol Mines Pontiac County Quebec. Their son David is also my Great Grandfather born in 1837 and died in 1927. He was married to Isabella Manary born in 1842 and died in 1919. She was from Lanark Ontario. 
I have a question for Todd Manary. Are you related to my Great Grandmother Isabella Manary? Where do you live?

Hello Dale, Nice to meet you. I am indeed a Manary cousin from the Pontiac Quebec family. Isabella (David Small) would be my 3rd Great Aunt and Uncle.. and all of their descendants are my cousins. I work pretty closely with a couple of your closer cousins in our research. I live in Collingwood, Ontario.

This is the information I have on the Manary family, James Manary (no info) married Isabella McLellan. She was born in 1814 in Scotland and died in 1888 in South Dakota USA. They are the parents of Isabella Manary that married David Small. (My great grandparents). David and Isabella had 12 children. One of these children was Sarah Small born 1870 and died in 1952. She married William Raycroft and they had a daughter named Theressa Raycroft which married Bert Manary. I have no info on Bert Manary but Threressa Manary died in 1985. Theressa had a sister that had a little boy but she died very young and Bert and Theressa adopted him. His name was Douglas. Douglas got married to I forget her name now, but they had three children, A daughter, named Margaret, a son, named Albert and another younger daughter. Albert was about 18 years old when he got killed in a car accident. I still remember this as I used to play with him. These were my fourth cousins. My father and I used to go visit the Manary's in Braeside Ontario, quite a bit. My father and Theressa were first cousins. I hope this helps you and did you know Bert and Theressa Manary?
