On 1901 Census shows Mary born Galway with father named John Thompson b 1816 and mother Catherine b 1822.
They had children: Margaret Thompson b 1841 Ireland
Mary my great grandmother! b 1847 Ireland [married John Thomas Leach 1878 Rochdale]
Ellen Thompson b 1856 Rochdale, Lancashire, England.
So between 1847 and 1856 they moved to England
John R. Thompson b 1859 Rochdale, Lancashire, England
Martin Thompson b 1863 Rochdale, Lancashire, England
Anybody with any clues to help me go further back would be appreciated. And happy to look up things at this end.

I checked on Roots Ireland for a baptismal record for Mary from 1837-1857 but got no record. I did a similar search for William but did not find a record. You did not mention the religious denomination but if they were C of I from Galway city, you may want to contact the local church. http://ireland.anglican.org/information/dioceses/parish/14160 Available RC records are on Roots and I was unable to locate a reocrd.

Ooops sorry Roger I have only just seen this. It's ages ago, but just wanted to say thanks for doing the search. I'm still searching and have found a couple of things but cannot confirm them. I have had more luck with my paternal grandmother's side in Louth and have actually found her birth certificate.
