We know our ancestors, Mary Hogan and John Daicy [sic] left Ireland in 1848 for Australia.  John was the son of John Deacy (or variant) and Catherine Daley of "Cork", exact location not specified but I have a theory that they may have been from Skull.  Oral history says that there was a connection with the Hull family who were possibly landlords.  Perhaps someone knows something.

  • Hi Anthea

Here's a baptism record from www.rootsireland.ie/: You didn't give the year of arrival but if he was about 22...?

Neither parent's fist name is what you have but her surname is

    Name:John DeasyDate of Birth:

    Date of Baptism:11-Jul-1826Address:
    Parish/District:CARRIGTWOHILLGender:MaleCountyCo. Cork

    Denomination:Roman Catholic
    Father:Denis DeasyMother:Mary DalyOccupation:

    Sponsor 1 /
    Informant 1:Thomas KeeffeSponsor 2 /
    Informant 2:Joan Barry

The Tithe Applotments 1823-37 (free at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/) have 167 Deasys in Cork including lots of Johns but I couldn't find a mention of Skull.

No luck in the early Irish Censuses.

Griffiths Valuation 1848-64 (free at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/) is probably a bit late. It does have 200 Deaseys in Cork.

www.irishgenealogy.ie/ is good for Cork records so give it a shot if you haven't already.

Thanks so much.  I had another shot at usingwww.irishgenealogy.ie/ and came up with the attached!  I reckon these are the third great grandparents I am looking for.  After a 30-year search, this is a real find!  I am trying now to verify if there's a record for my 2nd ggfather's brother, Daniel Deasy.  If there is a match, all will be confirmed!  I can't tell you what a relief this is.  Thanks again.

  • Hi Anthea, Are you still hunting for Skull Deasys? My great grandfather was Daniel Deasy, son of John Deasy, with landlord William Hull in Skull, (specifically Leamcon near Skull). John and his family, including son Daniel who was a child of about 10 or 15, had to leave Skull or Schull around famine times or shortly after. John Deasy is said to have one brother. Ruth Deasy.
