Hi I'm descended from James Naughton born in Ballyhaise Cavan way back in c1817 (Catholic). He enlisted in the Army in March 1833. He married Maria Mitchell, I'm not sure where they were married or if she was local to the same area. I would love to have any information on him or his family. Thanks!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on Roots Ireland in Co. Cavan for a baptismal record for James from 1807-1827 and a marriage record from 1827-1847 and got no record. The Castleterra RC records start in 1862 which likely explains why the records were not on Roots.

  • Thanks for your welcome and time. James came out to Australia and New Zealand in the Army and became an early Commissioner of police in Auckland NZ.. I seem to be able to find things in his later life and because of army records I know where he was born. But would be wonderful to find out his parents and siblings at least, and if there were any relations left in Ireland. And also if they had been in Cavan for years etc. Do you know if there are any other types of records I could search? Thank you! Marianne

I don't think there are other records. Civil registration did not start until 1864.
