I've been doing a lot of research on my family and made some fascinating finds but I'm a bit stumped once I get as far as my great grandfather James Corr. He joined the British army in 1883 stating that he was from Armagh parish, and in another document from a few years later it states that his parents Patrick and Margaret Corr lived in Canal Street, Armagh, but I can't find a Canal Street in Armagh? I've also been unable to trace Patrick or Margaret so any direction on how or where to look, or anything that might explain the Canal Street reference would be much appreciated, DC

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The 1864 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Armagh parish (which includes the town) does not show a Canal St.

There are Corrs listed. Possibly one of the streets shown was also know locally as Canal St. I also note that there is a Callan St. in Armagh town in 1864 and was also there in the 1901 census.

  • Thank you Roger, both for the welcome and the information!

I reckon you could have hit the nail on the head with the 'Canal' - 'Callan' conundrum! I'll have another look through Griffiths' and at the census records for 1901,

Take care and thanks again, Damon
