Searching for O'Hare family history relating to my gg-grandfather Hugh O'Hare (b abt 1801-1802),  married Hannah Burns (b. abt 1805), and emigrated to Ontario, Canada. He may have worked on the Rideau Canal in Ontario.

Hugh and Hannah had 8 children. The first was a girl born in Ireland who died on the voyage. The second girl died as an infant. I have found the following children, all born in Ontario:

     Ann b. April 1831, m Michael Malone, d. in Ontario 1913

     James B. b. 1837,  m. Mary Egan, d. 1926 Bay City, Michigan, USA

Francis, b. abt 1839, emigrated to Pennsylvania USA in early 1860s, m. Harriet McAlister, d. 1871 in  PA

Hugh Augustine. b. May 1841, emigrated to USA abt 1865, m. Nancy Purtill, lived in Titusville, PA, was involved in the exploration of oil, d. 1927 at the home of his daughter in Cleveland, Ohio. He is my great-grandfather, the first of four Hugh Augustine's in a row.

Mary, b. abt 1844, emigrated to Michigan USA, m Simon Moran, d. 1891 in Montrose, Genesee Co, Michigan.

My dad wrote in my baby book that Hugh (b abt 1801) was from Kilpatrick, Co. Down. Researchers located in Ireland have told this is probably Seapatrick as there is no Kilpatrick in Co. Down. One researcher told me that he found a marriage record that could be for the parents of Hugh (b abt 1801.) That record shows Hugh O'Heer, batchelor full age, married Anne Cunningham, spinster full age, in Haggardstown RC church near Dundalk on 3rd July 1801. Witnesses were Hugh Cunningham, Patrick O'Heer. This record is the one that is most likey of my ggg-grandparents.  That same researcher said that some O'Hares left Co. Louth for Co. Down, seeking farmland to rent.

Co. Louth or Co. Down, especially in the Dundalk, Newry, Banbridge areas, seem the most likely areas to find relatives. The only information I have on my gg-grandmother, Hannah Burns O'Hare, is that she was one of seven children. I developed the possible birth year of 1805 using census records in Canada.

I would love to connect with any O'Hare or Burns (Byrnes) family in the area to learn as much as possible about my ancestors. Thank you.

If the Hugh record is the correct one I imagine one of the later Ann ones would be more likely going by the age difference

if you google PRONI (http://www.proni.gov.uk/) and select name search enter Burns locality Down you'll find 19 Burns including 9 in the 1766 Religious Census.

If you do the same for O'Hare without specifying locality you'll get 40 hits but none as early as 1766.

  • Thank you for all this information. I haven't been able to get back to my genealogy research until now. I feel that there is a real likelihood of some of this infornation being related to my family.

    With deep appreciation, Sarah

  • Hi

Looking for an O'Hare or could be Hare, probably in Aghaderg circa. 1830,  born c. 1770, he had a brother living in Ballymore, County Armagh, whose son his nephew was called William Hare or O'Hare who was probably born in Ballymore in circa. 1792. The O'Hare/Hare in Aghaderg was probably living in the townland of Loughbrickland, his nephew William worked on Newry canal 1810-1818.

  • Hi Shaun

I tried rootsireland, the early Irish Cenususes and the Tithe Applotments for the Hares / O'Hares but no luck I'm afraid.

You might want to have a look on PRONI - good for Northern Itish records

  • I have some additonal information about the O'Hare family from whom I am descended. My gggfather Hugh O'Hare had an older brother, James Henry O'Hare, born about 1797. James Henry and two brothers traveled back and forth from Ireland to Canada several times. I suspect the two brothers were Hugh (abt 1800-1850) and Patrick. A descendant of James Henry told me that her gggfather was related to the Hugh A. O'Hare (1841-1927) who was active in oil exploration in Titusville, Pennsylvania, USA. James Henry was a brother to Hugh O'Hare (abt 1800-1850) husband of Hannah Burns, father of the Hugh O'Hare (1841-1927) who was an oil driller. I have since found baptismal records for the children of Hugh and Hannah Burns, with the exception of the last child, Mary. The parents of the six baptismal records were Hugh O'Hare and Hanna or Hannah Burns so I feel they are all the same family. Thanks in advance for any help,
