I am trying to find my 4th great-grandparents, Arthur Potter and Nora Concannon.  Their son, my 3rd great-grandfather, William Joseph Potter was born September 9, 1840 in Ireland and he immigrated to America in May 1857.  The only information I have found to place them in Galway is a baptism record for William's younger sister, Anne, on April 19, 1844, in Donaghpatrick.  I have found a lot of records for William in America but nothing that says where in Ireland he was from or any information about his parents other than their name's on his death certificate.

I would appreciate any help.  Thank you.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The RC parish records for Donagh Patrick parish start on April 8, 1844 just 11 days before Anne was baptized. Here is the link to the register http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1053   So no record is available for William. Below is a transcription of Anne's baptism.

I looked on the 1856 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Donagh Patrick civil parish but there was no Arthur Potter listed. There was an Arthur Potter in Killererin civil parish which is tow parishes to the east of Donagh Patrick.

Possibly the family moved but also it could be a different Arthur Potter.

I did find a civil death index record for an Arthur Potter who was born in 1798 and died in 1875. Possibly it is for your ancestor .

  • Is there any way to determine if John Cottingham and Catherine Burke are relatives?

  • Honora:

I think it would be very difficult to make a connection. I guess it is possible that Catherine Burke was a married sister to Arthur or Honor Concannon but finding the documents proving the connection would be very difficult.

  • Roger,

Thank you, I thought that would be the case.  I am finding "Arthur Potter" many times in the petty sessions court records and dog license records (and even an "Honor Potter" a couple times) but I have no idea if they're my ancestors, relatives of my ancestors or just people with the same name.  The dog licenes say Gurteen for court, while the petty sessions say Derreen for court with residences listed as Barnagh, Cloondahamper, Cahergall and Ballybrone.

All my life I have lived with an "unsual" name and since I've begun my research I have found that Honora was quite a common name in 19th century Ireland and does not narrow down a list of potential names for me.  William Potter married another Irish immigrant, Honora Casey, in Kentucky and her parents, John Casey and Cecelia Thornton are proving more elusive.  I have yet to find any record of their home other than on the 1920 census where Honora answers that her's and her parent's native tongue was Irish which makes me think they're from Galway but I really don't know for sure.

I hope to visit Ireland next year and I would like to have that information before I go.  I'll keep researching.

Two of the three townlands you mentioned-- Cahergall and Cloondahamper are in Killererin parish which is the parish where I located the Arthur Potter in the 1856 Griffiths Valuation.

Ballybrone is in Athenry civil parish.

  • Is there a local history book available so I could learn about the area?  I'm very curious to learn all I can about the time and place my ancestors are from.    Honora

  • Hi Honora

The Parish of Killererin are in the process of publishing a local history book and they hope to have it ready by Christmas. You can keep an eye at the link below for further progress on it. Potter is quite a common name in the parish:

    http://killererin.galwaycommunityheritage.org/

There is no specific history written for Donaghpatrick that I am aware of, but there are a few sources that you can get on a Google search that refer to the parish, including the often under utilized Duchas website. This site hosts the National Folklore Collection, part of which is devoted to the Schools' Collection. This is a series of records that were produced in the 1930s by children all over Ireland who were asked by the Prime minister of the day, Eamonn DeValera to interview older members of the community and write about their own areas.

The result is the Schools' Collection and for Donegal, Galway and Mayo the information has been digitised and is available online. The link below refers to Donaghpatrick. Just use the arrows on each image to change the page. It is an interesting collection as some of the info there is not available anywhere else:

Hope this is of some help/interest to you

    All the best

  • Hello to researcher Looking for Arthur Potter and his wife Nora (probably Honora) Concannon,

My ancestors from Killererin Parish were the McHugh and the Connelly families. I live in Sydney. My research shows that an Arthur Potter from Cloondahamper in Killererin parish was an informant at the baptism of my relative Bridget McHugh 28 January 1829. The other informant was Bridget Kelly. This information came from the Abbeyknockmoy parish record.

Arthur Potter was one of the names given by my ancestors as a recommendation for their suitability as emigrants to New South Wales in 1840. According to their emigration records the two men in Ireland who provided references for the McHugh family were Henry Kerwin Esq. and Patrick Cummins of Dangan. Henry Kerwin rented the townland of Barnaderg South from John A Kerwin while Patrick Cummins rented the townland of Barnaderg North from Hugh Henry.

My great great grandfather Peter Connelly as an adult male had his own emigration entry and was recommended by Thomas McGrath of Cahernagy Townland who rented from David Rutledge and David Commins of Barna in Killererin.

Looking at a map of the townlands Arthur Potter's land at Cloondahamper is neighbouring the townlands of the other referees.

I don't know if this is the Arthur Potter you are searching for but if it is this gives you specific names and locations of his neighbours in the 1830s to 1840s.

    Best regards,

    Diane Palos
