I am researching information about my gr gr gr gr gr grandparents, Edmund & Sarah Lanigan, who lived in Rathleasty (not sure of spelling)

Thomas Lanigan ( their son) was born 1809 and baptised in Drom church on 4th June, 1810.

Edmund Lanigan was born 1773 and died 10th April, 1830

Their other children that I know of are Patrick (baptised 18th March, 1813) & Michael (baptised 6th November, 1815)

I will be visiting the Drom area next year and I would love to see the area where my ancestors lived and also hopefully be able to find the graves of Edmund & Sarah. I am not sure if there are any of their descendants still living in the area?

Thomas was transported to Australia in 1833 which is where my family history in this country began.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Regards

Julie Kane nee Lanagan (spelling was changed when Thomas arrived in Australia as no one could spell properly back then) :)

  • Hi Julie

The Tithe Applotments (free online at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/) has Thomas Lanigan in Drom, Tipp in 1825 Looks like he was on the estate of the Rev Theobald Butler so you may have to do a bit of research to find where that was.

Tipperary is not in the Irish Censuses until 1851 but there are no Lanigans in that.

There are quite a few in Griffiths Valuation (1850) but neither Drom or Rathleasty is in the list of parishes.

I didn't find any Lanigans in Tipperary in the Irish phone book.

Unfortunately I couldn't find the death record for either Sarah or Edmund which might have helped with their grave location.

There is a site Drom Graveyard with photos so maybe that has them.

  • Hi Col,

Thank you so much for the information, every little bit helps.

I found that Edmund was buried in the old Drom cemetery in 1830 but I cant find anything about when his wife Sarah died or where she was buried. I have been trying to find information on Theobald Bulter's estate but not much luck there either! I still have a few months of digging to do before I get there so hopefully I might have some information to make things easier by then.

    Regards

  • Hi Julie,

There still are Lanigans in Templemore and Templetuohy (Lisdaleen) and several generations are buried in Templetuohy churchyard. One of that family was William Lanigan (1820-1900) Bishop of Gouldbourne. There is an entry for him in the Australian DNB. His parents were Thomas (1729-1828) and Bridget nee Dauton. He had brothers named Patrick and Michael but their DoB's do not match.

Best of luck with the research and visit.

    Bob.

  • Hello Julie

I was speaking to my brother yesterday and he can show you the locations of the old Lanigan homes in the townlands of Rathleasty and Kilvillcorris in the parish of Drom in Tipperary. I believe that he will also be able to give you lots of information their history.

He doesn't have an email address but I'll can pass on any information to him. If you are in Drom this year we will be happy to help.

  • Hi Jim,

Thank you so much for your reply. I would be very grateful for any information I can get on the Lanigans of Rathleasty. My husband and I will be in Thurles on 22/23rd July this year and I wanted to try to see as much as we can around the area. Apparently Edmund was buried in the old Drom cemetery so that was a starting point and go from there. I dont have my overseas mobile number as yet as we dont depart Australia until 30th June but would it be possible to give me a contact number so that I could contact you when we arrive in Thurles?

Thank you again for your help and please thank your brother for me. My family will be looking forward to any new information I can show them.

    Regards

  • Hi Jim,

Thank you so much for that. I will definately give you a call when we get there and see what we can organise. We will have the whole day to look around on the 23rd. I was going to try to find out if there is any way we can look around Rathleasty house, do you know if anyone lives there or who I could contact to see if its at all possible? We think that Edmund & Sarah may have lived and worked on the property at some stage. Not sure if that is correct or not though.

    Regards

  • Hello Julie

I was just talking to my brother.

He told me that Rathleasty House which was owned the Cahill/Barry family for hundreds of years was sold fairly recently after the last member of that family, Mr. Thomas Barry, died.

The new owners are currently rennovating the property. He says that the are very nice friendly people and are very interested in history so will be glad to meet you.

It is highly likely that Edmund & Sarah would have worked on the property as the old Lanigan home (not standing but we can show you where it was) was within view of Rathleasty house.

    Hello Jim,

    Wow, thank you so much!

Please tell your brother I said thank you also.

I have attached an old (and only) photo of Thomas Lanagan (Lanigan) for you. Apparently this photo was taken on his wedding day ( although they were never officially given permission to marry as they were both convicts) and he was in his late 20's early 30's? He certainly looks like he had had a rough life!! :)

  • Hi Julie,

It is most unlikely that the photograph you posted dates to the marriage of Thomas - he was born in 1809 and photographs were not common until at least the 1860's. Looking at the hair style of his wife I'd guess 1870's, which also would suit the age / appearance of Thomas.

  • Hi Bob,

Yes you could be right about that, I am just going on what other family members have told me. They certainly look old in the photo but they did age quickly back then. Would have made it a whole lot easier if they had written things down for the coming generations though! :)

  • For Julie Kane (nee Lanagan)

    Hello Julie

I am helping my wife trace her family tree back to its Irish roots (through Ancestry.co.uk) and have just come across the correspondence you had about your Lanagan ancestors in Tipperary. I have now joined the Irelandxo website.

My wife's mother was a Landrigan, and her great great grandfather was Cornelius Lanigan, who died in Thurles in 1882. He had two sons, Michael and Maurice, who both emigrated to England as teenagers. They both married in London and became Landrigan. Michael was my wife's great great grandfather.

I was very intrigued by your correspondence, because I have found the tenancy records for Rathleasty for 1847-1864, which show Cornelius Lanigan renting 7 acres from the Earl of Portarlington and the records also show substantial land rented by John Cahill of Rathleasty House. The land adjacent to Cornelius was rented by a Michael Lanigan, but, from the date, this cannot be Cornelius's son - I assume it was another family member.

I wondered what you found on your visit to Ireland, and whether our two families are related?

    Kind regards

    Keith Hall
