My great - grandfather, William McClelland lived on Browne Street in Portlaw in the 1870s. His wife was Margaret, nee Connolly. Their first child Hugh was born in 1875 while the family was living on Browne Street, William was a moulder. He later moved to Manchester, England where he appeared on the 1881 English census. He died in Manchester in 1919.

William's father was Hugh McClelland, a carpenter by trade. A family story is that he worked on the estate of Charles Beresford, later an Admiral of the fleet.

I am visiting Portlaw later this week and would like to know if the Portlaw Heritage Centre is open - the website says May to October for opening times - does this mean end of October as I would very much like to visit.

Any information about the McClelland family would be most welcome .

Kind regards,

Chris Hughes
