Hello from the NLI R/C records I have recently located the Baptism records for the Children of Joannes Colahan (John) and Catherine Donahoe of Ballymana Parish Clontuskert. Re: Colohan
As the family were roman catholic according to the baptism certs I reckon the baptisms took place at St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church at Crossconnell. Clontuskert had only 2 churches one Roman Catholic and one Church of Ireland (protestant)
The family lived at Ballymana at the time of Maria's birth in June 1867

Thanks for your speedy reply. I have also located, Hopefully the marriage record of John Colohan and Catherine Donohoe. My Latin is non existent. Does it look to you like two Donohoe girls got wed on the same day or are the additional names the witness's. Could St Augustines Crossconnell be the church for the wedding as well. Cheers Jo.

Jo, they are the witnesses, Theresa O Donoghue and Jacobus Goods. If the bride lived there it is very likely they married there too yes.

My great grandafther was John Colohan born 1865 in Ballymana, Clontuckert. He married Louisa Carey (18??) but my grandmother Elizabeth was born in 1906. I think because of the handwriting the surname may have been read as COLAHAN. My grandmother, mother and other Colohans are buried in the ruins of Clontuskert Abbey.

JoD, I hope you see this message. I think we are related. My 2GGF was Darby Madden. He had a sister Bridget who married Thomas Colohan (various spellings). The surname in the marriage is listed as Coolahan. Their son John married Louisa Carry. Bridget is living with John, Louisa and children in the 1901 census in Ballymana. DNA has connected me to another descendant of the Colohan/Carry family.

Hi Lynn, we must be related. My GGF John Colohan and GGM Louisa Carey I think had 8 children but I can't remember all their names. Not sure of the order but I met nearly all of them during the 60's, 70's and 80's. William, Thomas, Elizabeth (Williams ) (grandmother, born 1906 died 1997 ) Louisa (Lucy Lyons died 1972 ) Kathleen. Auntie Kathleen (Quinn) was the last of them and died around 2010. St Augustine's is the church where there bodies were laid overnight for the funeral the next day. My grandmother was then interned in the ruins of Clontuskert Abbey.
GGM Louisa had a brother (Patrick) who I met in the 60's and 70's and Uncle Paddy as he was known gave my mother away at her wedding in 1960.
I would be interested if you have more information

My Darby (Jeremiah) Madden married Catherine Williams in 1861 Clontuskert Parish. Witnessess were Thomas Colahan and Bridget Colahan. Through research I learned that Bridget's maiden name was Madden. Thomas and Bridget married 22 Jul 1855 in Clontuskert. I have been able to find 4 children through baptisms: James, Mary, John, Ellen and WIlliam. John married Louisa Carry in Kiltormer Parish Feb 1899. My DNA match indicates his mother's maiden name was Moloney, her mother's name was Carry and her grandmother's was Farrell. From what I can tell, William Carry and Elizabeth Farrell had a daughter Louisa Carry in 1875 (Kings Co/Offaly). There must be another Madden/Carry marriage to connect us directly. As a said in the prior message, you will find Bridget Madden Colahan living with John and Louisa in 1901. She is not there in the 1911 census. I presume she passed away during that time period as I cannot find her living with other children. Darby went back to Ballinasloe in Aug 1903 and returned to NJ in Mar 904. I suspect that it was for the death of a sibling but cannot find anything to confirm that. He was already naturalized so I don't think it was in connection with that.
Darby and Catherine had a son James in 1861. Witnesses were William Madden and Bridget Madden who I believe are Darby's brother and sister in law. Darby, Catherine and James emigrated to the US (NJ). Darby and Catherine had 8 more children.
I could not locate the parents for Darby and Bridget. There were birth records out of Tynagh but that seemed too far. I just found Darby's death record listing his parents as James Madden and Mary Murry/Murray. I cannot find baptism records for Darby/Jeremiah and Bridget. But I did find one for William (1842) as well as a brother James (1832). I believe Darby and Bridget are somewhere in between.
Probably too much info but that's what I know. My email is lynnsmilow@gmail.com if you want to communicate that way.
