Hello! We need some help to test our theory of a connection to Addergoole.
My great-great grandfather James Rogan emigrated from County Mayo, but no US records say where in Mayo. We do have reports that his father was named Bartholomew and never left county Mayo.
James was born in Mayo on January 10, 1808 and emigrated around 1840 with his wife Nancy (Kearney) Rogan - married in Mayo in 1838. As a side note, James and Nancy returned to Ireland in 1845, then turned around and went back to the US around 1847 - this brief return to Ireland seems to stand out as unusual, so I wanted to include it here.
UPDATE - We just received the obituary for Nancy Kearney Rogan from Oconomowoc, WI where she died in 1880. The document gives us a specific location in Mayo - Killala! (To be precise, it says "Killaloe, County Mayor." We can only assume this was a mis-transcription of Killala, County Mayo.) So, we are now zeroing on where the family is from. And this makes the theory below seem more plausible. I'm hoping Tommy Rogan or some other relative can help confirm it on the Rogan side, as well as the Kearney side for Nancy.
I'll attach the obituary below.
So, the only sign we have of a Bartholomew Rogan in Mayo is from the 1823-37 Tithe Applotment Books, showing a Bartly Rogan in Killala diocese, Addergoole parish, "Cloggernaugh" townsland.
http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/reels/tab//004239502/004239502_00480.pdf
(Our initial post here on IrelandXO got a comment that also spotted this Bartly in the tithe books.)
We do not know for sure this is our Bartholomew. That's what we want to test.
The reason we are keying in on this path is that James in Wisconsin had a son Bartholomew who went by Bartley. Another son of James had Bartholomew as a middle name.
So, for now let's assume he IS our Bartholomew Rogan.
He is the only Rogan in Addergoole in the tithe records.
Jumping ahead to Griffith's Valuation, there are just a few records of Rogans in Addergoole.
We have Bridget and Patrick Rogan in East Clogernagh in 1857.
For Clogernagh East, the research website linked below then shows Bernard Rogan in 1901
And Tommie Rogan listed as "today".

So, we're wondering if there is any way with parish records, or online tools, to confirm this chain of Rogans has a connection back to the James Rogan who emigrated to the US and settled in Wisconsin.
Or, we'd like to work out a way to perhaps contact Tommie Rogan or a family member of his (the site notes there are 5 family members). Maybe there is a family bible or other family story/document that can help us document the connection to a James Rogan, son of Bartholomew, born in 1808 who emigrated around 1839-40.
Please let me know your thoughts about this approach to testing a connection. Do you think this could work? How would you proceed? Is there any help folks in Addergoole can provide to move this process forward?
Thanks so much!

Dear Pete
Apologies for the delay in getting back to you.
Unless you can contact a descendant who has some information, the other way would be to find some info from records like a sponsor on a baptism record or a witness on a marriage record that might ring a bell.
Do you know if James had any siblings whose line you could trace as an indirect link or even a child of a sibling?
Best wishes

Hi Pete,
The best suggion I can give (based on personal experience) is to collect a bunch of different datapoints. My 2nd great grandfather Bartholomew Loughney was sometimes listed as Bartley / Barthy, so those are normal nicknames,.
What I'd suggest is for you to trace out (as you have) starting with the Tithes, Griffiths & 1901 / 1911 census and see if you can make any connections.
Rootsirelandie (a pay site) has the following baptismal record:
hurch Baptism Rogan Bartley 1852 Co. Mayo

Ann,
Thank you so much for this note. Wow - what a helpful response, for you to track down Tommy Rogan, contact him, and get permission to share his address. Thank you!
I have not been on the site in a few months, so I am just seeing your response now. I'll send a letter off to Mr. Rogan today!
In the meantime, if he is willing to be in touch by email, please feel free to pass along a warm greeting from me, and my email address - rogan.pete@gmail.com.
Once again, I am ever so grateful for your work to connect me to someone who may well be a cousin and may be able to answer some challenging questions about where in County Mayo my ancestors lived.
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Pete Rogan

Ann,
Thanks again for giving me contact information for Tommy Rogan.
As I noted a few days ago, we sent him a note in the mail. I hope he gets it soon and enjoys the story we told.
We have more news that points in the direction of there being a connection with Tommy. In particular, we posted an obituary of James Rogan's wife, Nancy Kearney that says she came from Killala, Mayo. Please look at the update included in my original post. If you have contact with Tommy, please pass along the news of our finding about Nancy, as well as our best wishes.
Thanks,
- Pete Rogan
