Hi,

I’m trying to locate any information about my great, great grandfather, Richard Madill.  I have his death certificate (issued in Queensland, Australia) which lists his place of birth as Kilmore, Monaghan, Ireland.  His parents’ names were Joseph Madill and Sarah Thompson.  His date of birth (I believe) is 24 Dec 1844 or near to that date.  That’s all the information I have about him before he came to Australia.  I don’t even know how he got here as I can’t find him on any shipping records.

He got married here in Australia in 1870 to Elizabeth Cusine Mathie and lived and died (08 Jul 1909) near Mackay in Queensland.

Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Annette.

  • Annette,

You would probably need to rely on church records to trace the family. Do you know what denomination they were? (The majority of Madills in Co Monaghan in 1901 were either Church of Ireland or Presbyterian, though there were a few RC).

The Church of Ireland baptism and marriage records for Kilmore parish start in 1826 but they are not on-line anywhere, so far as I am aware. There is a copy on microfilm in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast but a personal visit is required to access them. The RC baptism records (parish of Drumsnat) don?t start till 1875. However their marriage records start in 1836.

Not sure what the nearest Presbyterian church would be to Kilmore. Probably the Presbyterian Historical Society in Belfast would be able to advise you. They may also have copies of any surviving records.
