As we travel to Ireland 7.31.14, family members and I are hoping to find family burial sites and possibly living relatives---any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Patrick Higgins & Anna Kelly married in Ireland, possibly in the late 1820's.  They were my great-great-great grandparents.Their son Martin was born 3.1.1829 in "Co Galway"---died 3.21.1921 St. Paul, MN, USA.         1934 Roots Ireland has Patrick Higgins in Ballybuck, Parish Killinny, Co Galway. Upon further research, this is most likely not the correct Patrick Higgins.

Martin Higgins married Sarah McHugh in Ireland---her Church Baptism Certificate states baptism 3.16.1824 Parish/District Tuam---parents Michael McHugh & Catherine Neil. Sarah died 10.11.1894 in Minnesota, USA.

Martin & Sarah's  8 children:  Martin born 11.2.1856; Margret Mary born 4.17.1859; Annie born 1862; Catherine born 6.1.1864 Headford, Galway; Michael born 9.9.1867 Balleycasey, Headford, Galway; Mary born 8.17.1870 Balleycasey, Headford, Galway;  Patrick born 3.2.1873 Balleycasey, Headford, Galway; John born 7.13.1877 Balleycasey, Headford, Galway.  It is believed that Michael and Mary died as infants/children in Ireland prior to the remainder of the family immigrating to the USA 1880/1881/1882.

Genealogy researchers here have cited the 1855 Co Galway Griffiths Valuation---the researchers focused on civil parishes Donaghpatrick (found Higgins, Kelly, & McHugh names in this parish) & Kilcoona (Balleycasey noted on the baptism records for the above children).  Of interest, on this evaluation was a 93 acre farm jointly leased by Patrick McHugh, Michael Higgins, & John Higgins.

  • Dear Mary

Just to set the scene: records for the Roman Catholic Parish of Donaghpatrick and Kilcoona begin in 1844. There re some missing dates however; for baptisms between June 1844 and November 1849 and June 1861 and August 1863; for marriages between December 1846 and December 1849 and June 1861 and September 1863.

As you say, rootsireland.ie includes the baptism details of Martin, Margaret, Catherine, Michael, Patrick and John. If Michael and Mary died young, as you think, there may be a civil death record on this site if they died after 1864. I checked the Galway County Council website to see if the graveyard at Donaghpatrick had been digitised yet, but it seems not. You could take a walk through it as part of your trip if you intend coming to the area anyway.

Records for Headford don?t begin until 1880. For further information about potential burials you could contact the Parish Priest in Headford:  headfordchurch@hotmail.com

The Heaford Parish website is here: http://www.headford.org/our-community/st-marys-parish.html
