Re: Fitzpatrick/Maher

Looking for help on the parents & additional siblings of my great grandfather Patrick Fitzpatrick who was born in 1838.  I believe the marriage record (1832) of William Fitzpatrick and Ann Meagher was that of Patrick's (born 1838) parents even though the name is different. As further support of this,  Patrick(1838) listed his name as Patrick W. Fitzpatrick on the birth certificate of his son John Edward. Without any additional proof, I have to go on the assumption William was correct, and the father of Patrick(1838). If so could his father be William Fitzpatrick, son of John Fitzpatrick and Margaret Hickey? William was baptized July 7, 1808? I also see an Ann Meagher daughter of Michael Meagher and Catherine Meagher. Ann was baptized March 22, 1814. I also find a Patrick born 1796 and Anne born 1796 but they appear to be a little too old in my opinion to be the parents.

In addition below is a copy of some ads that appeared in the Boston Pilot, missing Irish section. It's showing Patrick (1838) looking for sisters Catherine and Mary Ann for which I have no records. The census of the US shows Patrick as having arrived here in 1864 and living in West Newton, MA in 1870 which would tie in with the dates on the ads. I'm also looking for tie-ins to the names mentioned in the 1857 ad below.

Boston Pilot Published Sept 5, 1857

Of JAMES FITZPATRICK of parish Ballyneal (Co. Tipperary), who landed in Baltimore, Maryland, 7 years ago last March; when last heard from, 3 years ago, was in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Information received by his brother John, Hydeville, Vermont. Also of his uncles William and Michael Fitzpatrick. who are supposed to be in Quebec.

Boston Pilot Published August 11, 1866

Of CATHERINE FITZPATRICK, daughter of Patrick Fitzpatrick and Ann Maher, of Castlejohn, parish of Ballyneale, county Tipperary; when last heard from, two years ago, was in Saratoga Springs. Any information respecting her will be thankfully received by her brother, Patrick Fitzpatrick, Hydeville, Rutland county, Vermont

Boston Pilot Published May 6, 1871

Of Mary Ann Fitzpatrick (sic), a native of county Tipperary who came to this country about 18 months ago; when last heard from about 7 weeks ago, she was at Oregon P.O. Warren co., Ohio. Information about her will be received by her brother, Patrick Fitzpatrick, West Newton, Massachusetts.

We appear to have two towns, Clashnasmut in the parish of Carrick-on-Suir and Castlejohn in the parish of Ballyneale. If I'm correct they are only separated by a river.

Looking for  anything available on Patrick's parents or sisters Catherine or Mary Ann or any other siblings? I find  having three counties Waterford, Tipperary and Kilkenny so close (about 2 miles) to these towns  makes it a little more difficult. Any suggestions would be welcome.

  • Dear John

Having read your piece above, I think that I too am of the opinion that William and Patrick are likely the same person in relation to the marriage listed. Have you already checked www.rootsireland.ie for a record of any other siblings? .

    Best wishes

  • Fitzpatricks and Mahars (Clashnasmut) both settled in the Castleton, Poultney , Fair Haven, Vermont area to work the slate like they did at home.

  • John: Just a heads up, there was also another Fitzpatrick family from County Down in that area and another Mahar family from Tipperary as well.

Re your ancestors in Quebec, try the BANQ (Bibliotheque et archives nationales du Quebec) they may be able to help you.  Whether they arrived in Ottawa (Bytown at the time) tou may want to try the Ontario Roman Catholic Parishes as many arrived in Ottawa (my ancestors did) and many went on to live in Quebec depending on the parishes they belonged to.  Many of the priests were transferred to many Quebec parishes and many of the parishoners followed their priests.

My ancestors are from the same area and with the three counties on top of each other it makes it that more difficult to find that needle in the haystack.

    Good luck

  • Thanks Peter and Dianne, every tip helps. To complicate matters further my GGrandfather Patrick Fitzpatrick married GGrandmother Ellen Hawe, daughter of Thomas Hawe and Mary Fitzpatrick from Ballyneale Parish. I haven't been able to trace her Mother's Fitzpatrick family with much success. Confusing, too many similar names. Thanks again, John
