Anne Mortimer - My Grandmother

I located a June 4, 1845 baptismal record for an Anne Mortimer father George and mother Ellen in the Aghagower RC parish which is just to th east of Oughaval parish . I will get back to you on the name of their townland. This couple also had a Patrick in 1847 and William in 1849. In all three records Ellen/Eleanor was shown as a Mortimer which may indicate that was her maiden name.

Also a John in May 1843 in Aghagower RC church. Here is the parish register http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1037. Unfortunately, marriage records start in 1854.

The townland for the Mortimers appears to be Cushinsheeaun in Aghagower parish. About 7 kilometers southeast of Westport.

Many thanks for your quick reply. It was very interesting to see this information. I looked on the link you gave me, could not make out a John in 1843 in May but found Anne Mortimer my Grandmother in 1845. Its great that you were able to find this for me.

I am really keen to find out about my Grandfathers birthplace but as I explained the spelling of Mcguirk has been altered over the years. Could you please tell me how I would go about finding his birthplace in around 1852. All I know is his father was Patrick and i'm not sure about his mother name.

Also on the birth cirtifiacate of my aunt Alice Mcguirk (spelt without the I) born in westport mayo 1877, it gave the birth place of her father Patrick being born in Mill street Westport, unfortunatley this doesn't appear to be right according to other sources.

The civil marriage record showed that Patrick was 22 and his occupation was engine driver. At the time, he was living in Wesport. Ann was listed as 20 not 30 and likely that was either a transcription error or she made herself considerably younger. I checked this Irish Times web site and the surname McGuirk and its variant names were mainly from Northern Ireland with Co. Tyrone as the most prevalent. This would fit with his occupation since a railroad would send their drivers around the country.

The only 1852 Patrick McGuirk baptismal record (father Patrick) on Roots Ireland is the record below in Co. Monaghan.

Hi Roger,

Your latest information has been very helpful. I have had a look on the link you gave me for the surnames, which eventually lead me to westport marriages and finding Anne and Patrick Mguirk's wedding certificate. It states on the certificate that Patricks father came from Dublin. Would this mean that he was just residing there? In answer to your question, they never moved from Ireland. They resided between Dublin and Westport.

I know that Patrick Died at an early age possibly in Westport around 1886-1889.
