Margaret Tierney was born on July 10, 1864 to Honora Buckley and Thomas Tierney in Borney, Tipperary.  She was their tenth child.  Her older siblings were: Mary, Honora, Bridget, Catherine, Thomas, Jeanette?, Jane, John and Elizabeth.

In October 1864, the family of 12 sailed together for America abourd the S.S. Hecla.  They arrived in NYC, setteld in Brooklyn for about 5 or 6 years and then moved to Paterson, New Jersey.

I am looking for any infromation that may be available or known to someone concerning this family.

  • The parish of Bourney falls within the civil registration district of Roscrea. I searched the civil indexes and see just one Margaret Tierney registered there in 1864. (Volume 13, page 664). If that’s your Margaret the birth certificate should tell you where the family were living, and that in turn may enable you to locate their home in Griffiths Valuation and other sources.

I looked on Roots Ireland and found seven of the baptismal records for the family. Here is the link to the RC register for Toomevara RC church where the baptisms occurred. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0810  The family lived at Borrisnafarney townland in Brorrisnafarney civil parish.Borrisnafarney is just to the west of Bourney civil parish and likewise Bourney RC parish.

I did not look for the marriage record which I will leave to you. The baptismal records were:

Patrick 4/17/1845, Mary 2/19/1847, Bridget 6/3/1851, Catherine 7/11/1853, Thomas 8/26/1855, Eliza 3/18/1862 and Margaret 6/26/1864. As lwyn pointed out there was also a civil record for Margaret. (Civil registration started in 1864).

Let us know if you have any questions.

  • Thomas Tierney is listed in Griffiths Valuation of 1851 as farming jointly with Jeremiah Tierney on plot 5 in Borrisnafarney, which was a 225 acres farm.

There were no Tierney households there by 1901:

  • Elwyn and Roger,

On behalf of my family, thank you very, very much.  This is the breakthrough that I was hoping for.  I am still struggling with the placenames and boundaries but feel like I am getting some traction.

If I understand correctly, the family attended church in the RC Parish of Toomevera between 1845 and 1864.  The Killaloe Diocese website indicates there are currently four Saint Joseph Churches in that parish in the townlands of Toomevera, Ballinree, Gortagarry, and Grenanstown.  Would the Toomevera Parish Register be inclusive to all these churches or was there maybe a sngle church in the 1850s?  I have sent an email inquiry to the parish?

The family lived on a 225 acre farm in 1851 in Borrisnafarney Townland, Borrisnafarney Civil Parish, County Tipperary.  Their daughter Margaret's birth was recorded in the Civil Parish of Bourney. Is that because Roscrea was the nearest large city and it is in Bourney Parish?

    Thank you again,

    Jim Smith

I will take the first shot at your questions and Elwyn can correct my errors. The RC parish register would include the records for all the chapels and churches that were part of that parish in the 19th century. I looked at the web site for Toomevara parish today and that is the first time I've seen four separate churches within a parish all dedicated to the same saint.

Registration districts in Ireland are fairly large and correspond to the Poor Law Unions which were established in the 1830s to feed the poor. The Roscrea registration district covers all or part of ten different civil parishes in northeast Co. Tipperary including Roscrea parish and Borrisnafarney civil parish. The Roscrea registration district also covers about ten civil parishes in southern Co. Offaly and part of one parish in Co. Laois. Registration districts are divided into a number of sub-registration districts also known as dispensary districts where the registration of civil events (births, marriages, deaths) were recorded by a Registrar in many cases a local doctor. One of the sub-registation districts within the Roscrea RD is Bourney. The Bourney dispensary district would cover Borrisnafarney and Boruney civil parishes.

So to answer your question the birth of Margaret in 1864 was recorded not in the civil parish of Bourney but in the civil parish of Borrisnafarney within the dispensary district of Bourney within the registration district of Roscrea.

    Questions?
