My gr-gr-grandparents came from Kilmichael, Cork to Massachusetts. They came to the USA in 1866, via Liverpool on the vessel "City of New York," and settled in Newburyport (Essex County) Massachusetts. They may have stayed with friends or relatives in Salem, MA prior to moving to Newburyport. He was Timothy Sheehan and she was Julia, whose last name has appeared in many variations -- Kilnane or Kilrayne are the most common, but someone told me that it might be Callaghan or likely Cullinane. Timothy's death certificate says that his mother was a Foley, and Julia's father was Daniel Cullinane/Kilnane/Kilrayne/etc.
Their children were Patrick, Mary (m. John Lynch in Ireland), John (my gr-grandfather), Daniel Canden, Cornelius, Timothy, and Julia, in birth order to the best of my knowledge, born between 1840 and 1861. I do not know if there were more children who stayed behind in Ireland.
Would anyone have information on this family of Sheehans? Would you know of family connections there?
Thank you!
Janet

I can't tell if you have the link to the online parish register for Kilmichael http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0069 or have visited www.irishgenealogy.ie which has church records for the Diocese of Cork and Ross which includes Kilmichael.
Regarding the name for Julia, the parish register on the 1855 baptismal record you sent in the other message shows Culnane. Note her brother who was one of the witnesses. Other records show Cullinane and her first name as Jude. I found their marriage record in Kilmichael in April 1836. There were two other children baptized in 1837 and 1839.
I would first use the www.irishgenealogy.ie site search for Timothy Sheehan from 1836-1860 in Kilmichael church and you should find the marriage and the baptismal records. The family initially lived in a place called Tomes which I can't identify. Some place names were not made official townlands.
Let me know what questions you have.

Roger,
Thank you for your reply. I do have the link to the Irish Genealogy page and that's where I found the baptism records. Do you think it is a safe assumption that Jude and Julia are the same person?
Regarding "Tomes," I found another record showing the spelling as "Toames," which turned out to be a church within the Kilmichael diocese. I'm not sure if it was also a town or if the church existed in the 1830s, but it seemed like maybe the "address" record might be listing a home church as opposed to a residence. Maybe?
Thanks again,

I think Jude and Julia are the same person. Not sure about Toames but likely it was a placename at the time within a townland.
