  • Annie Higgins Francis Murphy

I suspect your Edward is the son of Patrick Higgins and Mary Doherty of Clooncara/Clooncarha birth 1897.

The Civil Registrations offer the most convenient method to source information. There are two births and one death of interest for Annie Higgins in  the registration district of Swineford which Kilmovee fell within for Civil Registrations.

Annie Higgins death registered Swineford Apr-Jun 1915 Volume 4 Page 268

Further to this there is a marriage record for a Edward Higgins in the same registration district

Possible spouse:-  Anne Ruane, Bridget Mulligan, Maria Mulligan, Ellen McGowan

You can order a photocopy of the certificates from GRO Roscommon for €4 each http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

You may suspect the death record applies to the first birth and select only to purchase the later birth record. As this is the important link to moving back to confirming the right Kilmovee connection I would be tempted to purchase all three for Annie Higgins. There is a further birth for 1913 but as you seem certain of the 1915 date this may not be relevant.

As for the marriage I would hold off until you are certain of the name of the mother. Kilmovee is very close to the border with Roscommon and it was the practice to marry in the parish of the prospective wife . In this instance it may well have occurred in a different registration district and County. Add to this the birth year of the family I feel you are connected to (1897) this may not be the correct marriage record.

Another Edward appears to be connected to a Higgins family from Culmore near Kilkelly, which is also part of the Kilmovee parish which this marriage record may apply to.

You will need to download and print off the form, complete and dispatch by post or fax . If you wish the copy registration document emailed back to you there is also provision on the form for this.

Put the reference details on the form or on a separate attached piece of paper. Don’t worry about leaving some boxes uncompleted . So long as the GRO have the location, name(s), year, quarter , volume and page number the process is fairly straight forward
