I'm Brian Kiernan in Sydney, Australia, seeking recorded info. on John Kiernan DOB/Baptism in Oldcastle on 12 Jan. 1841, who emigrated to Melbourne between 1870-73. Parents believed to be Michael Kiernan and Brigid Coyle married Oldcastle 31 Jan. 1831.

Records also show DOB for a Michael  25/4/32, Elizabeth 20/5/40, Jane 4/8/4 and Mary 6/7/46. Gap between Michaerl and his sisters looks suspicious.

Would like to know which church (denomination) recorded these entries and any other details.

Thank you in anticipation.

  • There are 221 people named Kiernan in Meath in the 1901 census. Nearly all were RC so I?d assume yours were too. Here?s a link to the parish church. Don?t know if it?s the only chapel in the parish.

Oldcastle RC records start in 1789. There are transcripts on-line on the rootsireland site (subscription). In addition the National Library intends to put the original images on-line in July, free.

Regarding the possible gaps in the baptisms, you may find that some of the Oldcastle records are illegible, or have gaps, and consequently there may be baptisms that can no longer be traced. Many of the older parish records have faded or been damaged by damp etc. Not all are legible any more. Another explanation for a gap can be that the first wife died, and the husband then remarried a few years later.

  • Brian:

The Roots Ireland transcription records only show Oldcastle parish but I have to believe they were Catholic. When I search for the children in the Oldcastle C of I church, I got no record but when I search under Oldcastle RC church, I get the five children.

Regarding the gap, Ahoghill Antrim provided some good reasons why no records were found between 1832 and 1840. On July 8th, the National Library of Ireland will be placing all RC parish registers online for free searching. I would go through the register and see if you can locate possible faded/illegible records for other children.

I gave you the transcribed Roots records for Michael and John below. Same mother

  • Hello, Brian

My great grandfather, John Guirk, Oldcastle married a Jane Kiernan.

According to a headstone in Moylagh church, Oldcastle, Jane Kiernan Guirk died, 1921 aged 80.

My name is Patsy Guirke and I was wondering if this is this the same Jane Kiernan?

  •  Patsy, Jane K's DOB was 4 Aug. 1843 so doesnt fit age 80 in 1921. (Unless 80 a round figure; do you have death cert. record?)

  • Hello, Brian.
This is Patsy Guirke, a friend looked up the Kiernan and he said this is my great Granny, Jane Kiernan.
He said that the ages were wrong most of the time.

  • Thought there was a good chance that age given was approximate. Best regards.
