Outside of my "Michael Curran" whose headstone in Yonkers, NY states that he was born in County Waterford ...

all of my family; Mansfield, Daly, and May only have "Ireland" on all documents, including ship manifests.

I know when they immigrated to the U.S. and of their lives after immigration, but am trying to trace their family ties prior to immigration.

The names are as follows:

Catherine Daly (b. 1846) immigrated 1863 occ. gentleman's servant

Bernard May (B. 1846) immigrated 1863 occ. groom

Michael Mansfield 9ca 1819), wife Mary (ca1820), children Mary (ca 1843), Catherine 1845, William (1851). They immigrated 1863 on the ship Mendenonter.

Wife Mary was Mary and Catherine's STEPmoher, which would make the marriage around 1849-1850.

The Mansfield's could have been from County Mayo OR County Cork but not certain.

I focused on the Mansfields and found some possible records in Co. Waterford/Co. Cork except I did not find a baptismal record for Catherine.I located an 1843 baptismal record for Mary in the Clashmore RC church father was Michael Mansfield and mother Mary Knavan. I then found an 1848 marriage record for a Michael Mansfield and Mary Keefe in Clashmore RC. I then found an 1850 baptismal record for a William Mansfield, father Michael Mansfield and mother Mary Keefe just across the border in Killeagh RC parish in Cork.

I would use these records as "leads".

  • Hi Sherrie & Roger
There are 7 Catherine Daley birth/baptism records in 1846 on www.rootsireland.ie/; there are none from Mayo.
There are 24 more from other counties.
There is only 1 record for Bernard May 1846 + - 10 years:

  • Thank you. That really sounds like my Mansfields! Catherine is my great great grandmother, so it figures she is the one missing.

  • Looks like Catherine Daly may be the hardest, but it certainly sounds like this could be my Bernard. Thank you! Can you tell me where ARMAGH is?

My Bernard was a groom at immigration and immediately after coming to Yonkers, occupation: owns a blacksmith shop until his death. It's a shame the baptism doesn't have father's occupation.

  • If you look at the map of Ireland you'll find Armagh is a Northern Ireland county; the parish of Armagh is middle left of the county.

  • Roger McDonnell, thank you for helping me with my Mansfield family. In the 1855 NY state census I found that there was an uncle living with the Mansfield's whose last name was "Keeff". WIth that information, the immigration records etc., I am now 99% certain that the baptisms you supplied are my family.

Col Cafferky, thank you for the baptism on Bernard May. I found a marriage liscense for Frank May that states his father was from Northern Ireland. Armagh would fit right in. Bernard May also had a daughter he named "Margaret and the informant was a "Margaret May". Again, I'm pretty confident this is my Bernard and his family.

As a result of the kindess of you both, I can now backtrack my Irish heritage further with the information.

  • SInce my last post, I have gotten Catherine Mansfield Curran's death certificate. Unfortunately for me, it says she was born Oct 10, 1845 (Michael is her father, so that is confirmed), but the NLI Catholic Parish Clashmore registers only start at Oct 12, 1945.
Would anyone have any idea where else I might look for parish registers for Oct 10 - any idea what church they would have baptized her in?

Roger tried to find her for me on (I think) rootsireland (see above) without any luck.

  • Sherrie:

I would not necessarily assume that a date of birth shown on a death record is correct. Many emigrants changed their year of birth when they went to the new country for various reasons and you are relying on the informant remembering what the deceased told them. I looked at the Clashmore register and there is an October 1, 1845 baptismal entry here

    http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632278#page/255/mode/1up

and then it starts again on October 12th. Were they baptisms between the 1st and 12th and lost or no baptisms. We have no way of knowing.

  • The worst part is that I went through the register, page by page, and found every one of her sisters and brothers. Her father's two marriages, and her 1/2 brother's baptism. I found a savings bank entry that had her father's birth place (Uniacke) and his parents names. I found their immigration and the ship, and EVERYTHING from that poin on - BUT I can't find her Catherine's baptism!
